What's a stock SN 4V Cobra put down? And what n/a engine bolt on mods are best bang for the buck?

Have a co-worker's husband & son looking in the $5-7K price range. They're looking to drive, HPDE, and drag duty. They've been looking at non-Mustang options as well, but they are not really 'car people' in the sense of working on their own shit. So of course the teen son sees any sort of mods and he wants that car, but I warned them of ending up with someone's headache and to stick with a stock-ish car. Then, if they want, they can mod it down the road.

They came 305 so they should put down 285ish. My friend has one, basic bolt ons should free up a lot, cobra headers are a real pain but I say worth it. Also put gears and delete the butterflies. Also a 125 shot will really wake the car up.

This thread gave me an idea to start a database of SN motors/dyno #s. I created a sticky for different OEM engine options for you guys to fill in mods and what power you have made at the dyno.

I know dyno shops are different, I can speak from experience that a Mustang dyno and a Dynojet were within a few HP of each other on my 86 years ago. But a lot of people claim otherwise, so I don't know if it was a isolated incident or not. The #'s should be corrected so everyone is on the same playing field.

Thanks!. Yea, 305 is the rated. I'm curious on real world #s out of the box and modded. Not sure I'd let a novice spray it without understanding what they are doing. At this point, I don't think any of them have even driven a V8 anything. :)

Rich i couldn't agree more.. You buy a car thats already been modded, something goes wrong you have no clue where to start. Most I'll get a car with is just exhaust thats it. Those cobras should be in the 250-280rwhp range. I'm sure others will chime in

275 on the high side, but I have seen SOME hit 282 stock. 250whp is on the low side. I'd say 265 is the mean.
O/R X pipe and LTs the car will make 290-300whp. Add an SRI and IMRC delete and the car will hit 310+.
CAI's are worthless along with Tbodies unless they are FI.

Overall they're pretty stout. They just lack torque down low so 4.10s would be perfect for autocross/open course, and drag racing as well. I love mine and it was a huge upgrade from the 97 GT I had. 4.10s, o/r x, catback, sct tuner with email tune and I'm beating most exhaust, intake, dyno tuned and accessport tuned subies. Runs well for what it is. I trapped 106 as a high, and 104 as the mean.
