this has been an on going problem with my gt....she has a motor knock and a bad electrical problem :BangHead:

i took her to get an oil change about 2 weeks ago...i know i know, but i was too lazy to do it myself...had my guy check out the knock, he said he thought it was a rod :angry7: ...then he goes to back it off the lift, and she keeps on dying, she was running horrible, lights and gauges were going bonkers, so we thought there was a short somewhere, had the whole console and steering column torn apart and couldnt figure anything out, he hung from the midpipe though, and she ran fine, so he suggested that there was a short somewhere and the car was grounding out through the midpipe...i couldnt tell you though, i am not good with anything electrical...

so i get her home, have some buddies look at her, they think the knock is either a rod bearing or the timing chain, so i'll have a looksy tomorrow, its weird, the noise only happens when i rev it, not at start up, and not at idle...its strange.......

as for the electrical, no clue..i completely rewired my stereo, got new batter cables and everything, and shes still acting weird, everytime i rev it, the lights flicker and the gauges act up, next step is to check my HID's..

sorry for the long write up....but any help or suggestions guys would be awesome

is your low oil light comin on and off (possibly pre oil change)? when the bearings go they can clog the sensor an make it go cazy (thats just the low oil light though)

and just for safety you should run str8t headers for awhile and run with out he mid pipe to cause shorts hahahaha

Jim, when does the knock/rattle come in? drive it slowly down your street in 1st and bring it up to about 3500-4000 and see if you hear the rattle. if you hear it through that range, I would say you have one or more spun bearings. how many miles do you have on it? the same thing happened to me with my '98. turned out to be two rod bearings from over revving it on the front straight of sebring. good thing I trailered it!!!

im jeremy actually..hahah

but i wedged a block in between the frame and the midpipe and everything was fine electrical wise, so whatever it is, its grounding out through the midpipe..and the knock is only around 1500-2400 range, usually when i gas it, it has quieted down a bit, but i really don't want to drive it...

well, the rpm range doesn't really matter a whole lot, you may still have a bearing issue. can you only hear it when you are driving or does it do it when you try it with the car parked and the hood up? how many miles did you say it has on it again?

sounds like time for a re-build or a new shortblock. you know, your oil pump may be going out too causing the bearings to not get enough oil.
I'm sure some of the other guys on here may have other advise for you as well, but based on the symptoms and the mileage, it sounds like bearings to me.

hope this helps!

As for the grounding issue there should be 2 green ground wires attached to the radiator core support, make sure they are tight. I had the same issue on my last 5.0 and it solved the electrical issue.

thanks for the help guys, i'll check those wires rtgreen...ive also been told since it's grounding out through my midpipe, it may be something with the o2 sensor wiring harness, i'm gonna take a look at that today when i get off work

as for driving it, you think it's safe? with the bearing and all?

well me and some buddies took the valve cover off on the drivers side...everything looked fine, a few knicks here and there, but nothing substantial, or that would cause the noise we've been hearing..so we have no clue what it is..
