This pertains to 5.0 tech more so since diehard modular folk will find themselves pretty set in there ways, when I'd prefer a logical examination of the situation I'm considering.

Now, looking at the 03/04 cobra cars, you of course get 400 horses, a 6 speed, and above all pretty good efficiency across the board in terms of daily driveability (consider MPG). I'm questioning if a 5.0 is capable of 03/04 cobra territory. Meaning, with a well built, solid, and efficient 5.0 backed by a T56 and good suspension, is this car going to do the same thing as a cobra. It's a far off shot, and to me I don't see it happening. Granted the reliability of a 5.0 is pretty much a hard thing to beat. You can drive one on 3 cylinders running hot with only second gear and it will go till the gas tank runs out. Most would view this as a drag racing or total over all speed, where as I'm looking at a setup that I could drive cross country, make over 20mpg on the highway, and blaze my way well over a hundred miles per hour say on a spirited run on the autobahn. Just a matter of thinking.

Say if we were to deduce that the 03/04 drivetrain is better suited for say a road course/top speed/handling DD driven 'super car' so to speak, is it a legitimate idea to toss it into my car? Or is it better to just buy one. Alot to think about. I don't have an foreseeable parting time with the 95, as it will always stick by me. I'd much prefer to swap it in, but when your talking thousands more then say just buying a terminator itself, it becomes a bit to large of a commitment to waste that much money on. Just thinking out loud here folks.

If you research really well and have the proper funding you can put together a motor and drive train for the 5.0 that would handle road coarse racing and still get decent gas mileage. It will be similar to what a 03/04 Cobra can do but it won't be the same. They are just two completely different animals. I would price out my options. Look into building a motor that will do what you want and look into a drive train that will do what you want and then the cost of doing a Termi swap as well as just buying an 03/04 Cobra.


Personally I think that the Cobras look like sex. :la: Don't get me wrong I love the look of our cars (hence why I have one), but thats only cause I am a poor bastard and can't afford a Cobra. :tongue3:


If you wanna do what a Cobra does I'd try swapping in the SC DOHC 4.6, T-56, and IRS into your car. A 5.0/T5 can come close but it just can't be the same. Won't feel the same or act the same as the Cobra motor.

I've been pricing. Looking for parts cars, things of that nature. I just want to find what works for me. I've never been much for just the 1/4 mile, let alone the 60foot. Its always been a package deal. Sometimes I'm wondering if I'm in the wrong model car for what I want, since really I'm looking for BMW type characteristics in a mustang. I'm just trying to make it work.

You can build a 5.0 to be just like that. But Im not sure what the price difference would be. Although I believe either of those motors would be cheaper than buying a cobra. As long as you dont go way over board on parts, and have a decent tuner you can go to a 5.0 would be sweet. Besides those modular guys are so high on there horse with the 03 motor. lol. For me it would come down to price.

As far as speed 400FWHP and a DD that is easy. My buddy Ryan built a fox DSS 331 and made 400 FWHP and his car drives like he just left Ford with a brand new Fox.

As far as suspension, a mustang will never have the feel of a german engineered car. Just not going to happen.

I cant help but wonder where the differences come into play. My car will not be a DD in a couple months, and when that happens, I will have a spot open in the garage. The car will be tore apart and pretty much mutilated into anything I want. You have to wonder if even a mustang is capable of super car characteristics in the first place, or am I chasing clouds here.

I questioned maybe taking an assembly axle out of another car and going that route. I know all the junkyard folk around here, and can pretty much find what I need.

I just thought it would be cool, to make some sort of pushrod ford powered super car, versus modular like usual, or even some crazy tech.

i've seen an m5 drivetrain in a old 80 something m3 before. It would be something like that. I was looking at schematics of rear assemblys and what it would take. They aren't to far off from the cobra IRS assembly.

I'd buy a BM, it sounds like you rate them highly [as do i] and very little else is as good an all rounder.

Maybe looking into putting airbags on rear end. Like the lincolns. Ive heard of peaple doing with fox bodies, im sure it possible with our cars. I dont know if it would be worth it though. Maybe someone else has some expirience.

Well for one, BMW doesn't use airbags. Alot of it is just in the design. It makes it hard to replicate in another car. I'm just looking for now.

It's all about what you want.. The 03-04 cobra is an awesome starting point for engine mods. They love boost, and with a few simple
mods (exhaust, pulley change, tune), they can make great streetable power.. But the cost of the car, as well as the mods for it
are so much more expensive than the 5.0s. Of course it will feel like a better car seeing as how it's newer, more "refined", plus the
IRS would ride like a dream compared to the solid axle we're so accustomed to. If you want an all around "does it all" car, then the
Termi would be a good starting point.. But you could also throw MM suspension, coilovers on all 4s, a solid Vortech+Stroker combo,
get good MPG with your foot out of it, and out handle a Cobra, and a lot of other cars out there.

I really love my pushrods, always have. I'm not trying to knock them at all, I love them to death. Just thinking out loud here.

Pushrods are alot simpler, cheaper and easier to work with. A 347 would be good on the streets or maybe even something like a 306 or 331 with a s/c would be enough to have fun with. Plus that would keep it cheap enough to buy a t56, and some great suspension.

I understand that completely, I've had built 5.0s, as well as a shelby GT 4.6 car, and others. Efficiency is the name of the game for me. Big heads, Big cam, Big intake is great for the quarter mile and power, but at only 10 miles per gallon, it won't cut it. Not with the amount of driving I plan on doing.
