Hey guys, i'm doing a cobra motor swap on my 98 and i'm looking at some of the odds and ends of this complicated, time comsumming, money exstincting swap. I noticed that all the cobras had abs, so i'm guessing i'm gonna have to swap abs on my car as well. How hard is this and what parts will i need ? thanks.

You shouldn't need to swap ABS on, they may be a port or two that needs to be blocked, and that would be easaier than swapping lame-o ABS.

And I am secretely subscribing to see what everyone else says... Shh...

what do you mean a port or two that needs to be blocked off??? Will I need it to do the cobra brake swap? b/c i got the calipers and everything waiting to go on but no idea bout that.

Well i don't ABS either, but I'm assuming the hydroboost sytem runs at least one line to the ABS controller, which you or I could ignore. We only need the lines up the master cylinder. But the pump may have extra ports on it, which we would have to block, since we aren't using them.

For your Cobra brakes, you can ignore ABS all together, doesn't matter.

the power steering pumps, steering racks, and hydroboost systems are all interchangeable, the only difference is the actual metal lines. you dont need to swap anything and you dont need to get ABS for your car unless you want to, which i dont understand because its a PITA for performance (everytime you do a burnout it the ABS light will turn on, disable the system, and so forth).

just use the GT hydroboost and the GT master cylinder (same as the cobra one of the same year), and use the GT power steering pump

ok, so all that will hook up to the cobra wiring harness or don't worry about it ? also, wonder if i have to change over that thing that sits under the coil packs and has something to do with emissions. ????

yea i know but i was wanting to keep the imrc's with the cobra computer. I already have the harness and computer. On the flip side though some one told me that it wouldn't pass inspections when they plugged it up and it said cobra instead of 1998 gt 2v.... Wonder if i could just use the gt wiring and use the gt computer and get it tuned and wonder if it will still have that problem ?????

+1. you will just need to extend a few wires (mainly for the coil packs i think and the MAF).

for that smog pump, you wont need it.

thats exactly what you should do. like i said, its just a few wires that need to be extended to make the GT harness work. and you will definetely need a tune to make the 4v work on the 2v. (keep the IMRC's too)

I wonder if the Cobra ECU will plug in? You can always use an MSD box for the IMRC's.

You may want to look into finding a tuner now, and asking about that. Someone like LaSota or Modular Depot.

If i can get the cobra pcm and wiring to pass inspection ya know.

so i paid a visit to my friends smog shop today and i found out a few things:

1) i can perform smog tests. all i need to do is spend $4k on getting my license. lol :hammer:

2) my car still passes smog!!!

3) the vin # on the ECU will not match the VIN number the DMV has on file, but the smog tech wont be able to readily tell unless he actually compares the two numbers. the complications come when the DMV compares the two and realize they dont match, in which case they can then investigate the smog shop (thinking they were doing a shady smog shop) and then they can go after the owner of the car for an illegal swap.

you are pretty much either stuck with the GT ECU+Tune, or you have to do the swap legally, which means you have to get it registered and inspected by the DMV, which means you have to keep it stock until it gets inspected. on the bright side, people cant really tell the difference between a GT engine and Cobra engine by scanning the GT ECU. for all they know, its a DOHC 32v GT
