AC Clutch question

Should the AC clutch turn freely? I'm getting a bad chattering noise when I turn on my AC. The pulley spins freely but the clutch seems to get "hung up" when I try and spin it. My Ac does work on all settings.

Does there seem like there's play on the clutch?

I didn't note any play in the clutch when I spun it. The clutch does seem to hang up when I turn it by hand.

turn the car on and the defrost or ac on. Crawl under and watch it engage and disengage.


It has to have a very specific gap which may require shims or clutch.pulley replacement.
