Ok, I replaced the steering wheel with a FR500. The interior is Balck and Gray so the new black steering wheel with the gray air bag actually looked pretty good. What I didnt see untill after replacing the steering wheel is the minor scrape in the gray paint on the pony and again at the top of the air bag, actually it looks like its peeling up. So now, it looks like crap !!! So, I thought about removing all the paint from the air bag making it all black, which would look even better. Problem is how to remove the old paint without damaging the vinyl. Or, should I just paint over it ????? If paint is the answer then what's a "safe prep" so the paint adheres properly? And, suggestions on type of paint would be helpful.

I've heard in the past that dye is a much more effective solution for vinyl.

Thanks, I had'nt thought about that. Im afraid that with dye over the gray it'll be splotchyed or spotty. I started cleaning off the loose paint and wound up with 2 large black spots and numerous small spots. The rest is still hanging on to the gray. I do have some black dye. I'll test a spot and see. Any other suggestions are appreciated as well ....

I did the same and at first liked the FR500 with my tan bag cover but its starting to bother me so i'm going to get some of that black interior dye and maybe do the entire interior if the bag comes out good.

Post pics...

Yeah, it WAS minor ...... then I tried to clean it up and made it worse. About 1/3 of the airbag is now black. I'll work with it some this weekend. If I find a good solution, short of buying a black airbag, I'll post back. What I'd really like is to just get the remainder of the old gray off and then leave the airbag black.

the interior dye by Duplicolor will work just fine. I as well as other people have dyed entire interiors with it, and it looks fine. regular paint will chip and start to show the original color after while.

UPDATE:

Here is the airbag after I cleaned off as much of the old gray that I could ... shy of using chemicals on the vinyl.

Here is the finish look after three coats and install with the new FR500 steering wheel

Actually it looks better in person. The new look works great with the interior color combination ... especially with the new carpet.
Thanks for all the suggestions !!!!

now just do the center console and the lower half of the dash.

HA ! ..... I do like the ALL BLACK look but it's just not for me. Actually the new seats will be a matching black and gray combo too. Sortof like these Ford Racing seats.

sweet seats!! where'd you get em?

Oh, I wish they were mine .... That's how mine WILL look when I have them done. Those pics were sent to me by a friend. They may even belong to someone on this forum. All I can tell you is that they are Ford Racing Seats that of course are no longer available.

Did the black dye you used match the black plastic in the car?

I like the 2 tone look myself and have tan/black seats and tan/black floor mats and tan/black leather shifter,e-brake boots but i'm going to dye all my tan plastic black because it shows dirt way too easily.

Heres my seats... not as mixed as those FR seats but still different then most and breaks up the sea of tan madness.

Yes, the dye matched perfectly. If it looks a little off its because of 100% humidity that morning so it had a little condensation on it. I used a glossy black and was really worried about it too but when it dried it matched the vinyl parts of the new wheel perfectly. Also, I dyed the piece right behind the steering wheel so that all the parts that turn would match ........ AND ....... THOSE SEATS ARE SWEEEET !!!!!!! I know what you mean about breaking up the color. Sitting in all that GRAY makes the interior BORING !
