ANOTHER tranny seal..

Well for the second time, the rear tranny seal is leaking, this time, worse than the first. There is tranny oil all over the passenger side Cat and pipe up to the muffler. Weird part is, we JUST replaced the damn thing in May. Is it normal to go through these many seals or is there something else wrong with it? BTW, the car has 209000km and it has the T5...

The tailshaft bushing is probably worn causing the yoke to move around too much. That would be my best guess.

Thanks! Thats what I was fearing it was. Sadly, I can't get a day off to change the dang thing for 2 weeks. I won't be doing any harm to the car driving it like this for 2 weeks right?

I don't think so. I believe you need to remove the tailshaft housing to get to that bushing, and it requires a press to get out. Never done one myself so I'm not the expert on this one. Good luck with it.

Sorry for bumping my thread, Didnt want to make a new one but all the guesses in this thread were wrong. We went to one of the guys we know who works on car and said its the driveshaft yolk, sure enough we take the shaft out and look on the yolk with a straight edge and there is a groove worn into it, causing a slow leak. Putting me back only $93, appose to $190 from ford. but we are getting one 1/2 inch shorter, will it make that much of a difference?

Huh, well that's one I've not heard of before. I'de be concerned about what caused that groove in the first place. You can't get the correct lenth yoke? Spline engagement is important.

the car has 200k on it, probably more of an aging thing than anything. Also we saw were the old yolk was riding on the seal and the guy said the 1/2 inch shouldnt matter. Even if it does screw my tranny, its just an excuse to get a newer T-5 has the sync rings in those one are really screwed.

get the right yolk... 1/2" is alot to be playing around with.

just remember, in 4th gear, the driveshaft spins JUST as fast as the motor does...

just keep that in mind

we put the other the shorter one in and it works great. I'll test it on the freeway tomorrow to feel out any issues, but my vibration I had at 70kph is gone for some reason now...
