AODE doesn't lock up?

So I installed a used "built" AODE in my 95 GT along with a PI 2800 Converter. It was rebuilt in 03 by a local trans shop, I don't know the exact miles on it, but the car sat for about 2 years with a blown motor so I would assume it's got decently lower miles...

I'm not sure exactly what is done to the tranny, but I believe it's got 4r70w guts since it's got a different pan and uses a 4r70w filter (completely different pick-up and filter from my stock AODE). The previous owner just told me it was "built" and had a shift kit...

My problem:

When cruising with OD on, the trans shifts into OD and lock's up for a minute (rpm's drop), then kicks out (rpm's raise up like 400rpm). It stays in 4th (OD) gear, but the converter doesn't stay locked. I'm pretty sure the converter isn't a non-lock up version because it does lock up for a moment (maybe 30 seconds before it kicks out).

Any ideas? I'm new to auto trans, so I have no idea where to start lol.

Sounds like a converter/valve body malfunction. If it was a non-locking converter, it wouldn't lock up at all.

Good Luck.

Any ideas on where or how to start diagnosing?

I'm not sure how the electronic od works...is there some sensor that tells it to lockup? What controls the lockup?

The new ones are pretty much controllrd by the ECM. I know just enough about the new trannys to get hurt. Search the threads here. Might find something on it. Might have to contact the shop that built it. You probably didn't want to hear that but....

you are right about the computer controling the lock up, with my bumannator TCS i can set when it locks up (if at all) and in what gears, the thing is amazing

I know your EXACT problem. I had the same issue.

Here is the problem.

You have a OBD 1 PCM that is used for an AODE which is virtually the same as a 4R70W. The problem is the 4R70W automatically comes with the Ford Racing Wide Ratio Gear Set. Ford did that because the 4.6L had no balls on the low end so they wanted to give it the extra push to get it going.

So your PCM is making a few attempts to lock-up but is not recognizing the gears so after it tries a few times, the PCM finally says fvck it I just won't lock up.

Now, the Baumannator TCS can fix this. Some tuners can also fix it through a Dyno Tune with a Diablosport/SCT software.

I got my car tuned but didn't care about the lockup. It is a difference of maybe 200-300 RPM.

Damn, I had a feeling this was the issue after doing some more research...I was just hoping it was something else lol.

I don't really want to spend $425 on the TCS...Will I have any issues if I just leave it how it is? I just won't have those extra 300 or so rpm's? I don't wanna screw up the trans or anything...Probably just a little more heat and maybe a tiny bit less mileage?

Nah dude...you'll be fine. The only thing is your converter will not lock up so you'll be running a few hundred RPM's higher than normal. So you'll burn a little more fuel which you probably won't even know the difference.

I was on the phone a few times with Karl Baumann and Performance Automatic. They both said it is not a big deal. Not going to hurt a thing.
