Check out this great site on AODE ,4R70W transmissions http://www.clickclickracing.com/forums/ It really helped me out. [search for aode to 4r70w gearset swap ]. I put AODE planetary gearset ,all electronics and wiring from 1995 mustang AODE into 1998 explorer 5.0l 2wd 4r70w trans, so I don't get ratio code problem with computer [gearset ratios are different]. I also used torque converter from 98 5.0l 4r70w, and bought 96 and up mustang 4r70w driveshaft. 95 driveshaft yoke a little smaller. also check this video out http://www.mn12performance.com/mn12-techinfo/trans-tech/4r70w-trans-tech.html this helps with taken apart trans.

A stock AODE internally with decent valvebody mods will hold 400 rwhp easily, but if you want a manual, then do that. But know that T5's don't hold the stock 225 hp, let alone anymore without some money into them either.

I guess I might do that. I just want something that isn't going to give me alot of problems.

I think I'll do something like that, along with the newer imput shaft. A shift kit and a rebuild trans w the trans cooler you suggested. It gets pretty hot here in Puerto Rico. The other upgrades interest me too, but may not be possible by the time being.
Thank you guys!

Well you can pick up used Tremecs pretty cheap, or get a T56 in there, but a T5 isn't worth having without adding about 1500 in parts on top of it, plus labor.

When you're ready, update the thread and I'll get you on track with the little bits that help a ton.

Well, the problem has gotten worse. When the car reaches normal operating temp. and it's time to accelerate from a stop, I need to shift into 2 so it won't slip out of D. Guess I'll take out the trans for a rebuild. This SUCKS BIG TIME!! :wall: I'm starting my Vacations this 30 and when I thought I was going to RELAX, this sort of thing happens! :hammer: I'll try to contact some friends of mine that have worked with Ford trannies so they won't rape me with the labor cost! :whip: I've only worked with my dad on a Chrysler/Mitsubishi 412 fwd tranny and ran really good, but this one sure looks more COMPLEX to work with.

It''s a piece of cake, there's only two bands in it, and only two clearances that need to be set for end play.

The direct clutch pack, how many frictions and steels you use, need to be combined with the wave plate and selective washers in the front.

Update

Well, I poured a bottle of Trans Magic into the aode and fixed my problem for seven months :)
But this past Dec. 31 I gave a wash to the engine and was running fine. Then when I was leaving from the place I was in new year, the tranny didn't want to shift to 2nd in part throttle, only when given more than half. It shifted fine in D2, but when put back into D, it went like blank and went back into 2nd gear. I checked all the fuses and were fine. I also noticed the idle speed was too high. I unplugged the IAC motor and went back down, so I suspect that it's dead. Any Ideas?

Get a rebuild lol..

Mine was driving and would never shift in to 2nd until I got to about 5000 RPM and than it would REALLY shift hard, harder than my shift kit normally does. Than it slowly continued until it would not shift at all..

My front band was all fvcked. I took it to the shop with all my new stuff from Performance Automatic. Dude showed my my front band and it was done lol..

My clutches and everything were all still beautiful. I needed the extra strength anyways...

Like JR said get a good solid rebuild from someone with experience and you should be good for a looong time.

If you want to go a cheap route.. a 96-98 4r70w from a v6 will bolt right up and all the plugs are the same. I went from an aode to one just to keep my car driveable and its handled pretty well for a $150 tranny. After two years of abuse its starting to slip but im going to a t-5 next i think. Autos are too damn expensive.

Same transmission, different gear ratios.

Thanks folks. You confirmed what I thought. I can't complain about the seven months it was working fine w the blue bottle remedy lol, but rebuild time has come. Just reviewing what parts should I put to it for better strenght.
99 Direct Stub Shaft for AODE/4R70W
good trans cooler
Improved Main Pressure Regulator Valve for 1992-1995 AODE and 4R70W
Improved Bypass Clutch Control Valve Sleeve and Plunger for All AODE and 4R70W Transmissions
Mechanical Diode Intermediate One-Way Clutch kit (Reverse Drum, One-Way, and Retainer)
1992-1995 AODE/4R70W Valve Body Shift Kit
That should give me a good lasting, tire chirping tranny, right?

just about, add a PI stallion 9.5'' converter and a TCS and you'll have a stick killing auto.

I would get a good solid valve body kit and a good solid clutch pack setup with those parts you listed.

The Raybestos Blue clutch kit is awesome.  You can get them from Karl Baumann @ Baumann Electronic Controls.

Karl Baumann has pretty much every part you could need for a good solid rebuild.

Part # RK-AODE  1992-1995 AODE/4R70W Valve Body ReCalibration Kit $99.95

Part # DIRHPE

High Performance Direct Clutch kit with Steels and Raybestos Blue Frictions, Specify Cast or Stamped Drum when Ordering.  $145.00

Take a look at this link...

Is there a book where all those upgrades appear so I can give it to the guy who's gonna work in my tranny?

No, lol. He'll have the option of ordering Raybesto's Tans, Blues, or BW tans. OR Alto Red's, just tell him to use the blues.

J.R. blues are the best correct - that is what I was originally going to get from Karl Baumann..

I think I had told you before that Performance Automatic sent me the Alto Red Drag PacK Rebuild and I was worried that it wasn't as good as the blues.

I think you told me the Alto Drag Pack was fine but you prefer the blues correct??
