ATF for manual transmission?

So I'm looking to replace the transmission fluid in my 5 spd 99 GT, and in my research as odd as it is I've read that the 5 spd manual transmission takes Automatic Transmission Fluid.

Can somebody confirm or deny this and if so explain why this is?

If it does indeed take ATF is this a good choice?

I have ATF in my T5, no problems, its what they recommend....

Their are manual tranny fluides available. Like royal purple and B&MTrickshift. Ive experienced all three and would highly recommend the Royal Purple!

I use Pennzoil Syncromesh in my T-56 and Tremec.

Go with what is recommended. MD3 (Merc/Dex 3) for a T5.
