For me it really depends on the use of the car. For a fun, general purpose street/strip car i would have a manual. For a strip only, high HP, Low ET drag car i would go with a well built, and calibrated auto.

A well done up auto can be very fun on the street as well though. Stock, they are garbage.

imma move this thread to The Garage because it isnt a 2V tech question, plus i think alot of non-2V owners would like to answer this.

Wow, Im not feeling the auto love here. I love my auto, no Im not gay, it's just easier to drive in the city. I get better gas mileage than our 5-speed. Also I will never miss a shift if Im going down the 1/4 or autocrossing.

once my 5-speed swap is done, it will be safe to say that i will never own another automatic car again (unless it is an SUV that only comes with an Auto, i would still have my mustang too so it wouldnt be too bad)

How is auto easier to drive in the city? I think auto is harder to drive because you always need to use the brakes and hold the brake pedal.

Auto Trans Robs HP and MPG..... Remember, when you use the brakes, you turn kinetic energy into heat, which uses fuel.

For auto though, unless you are WOT with that 5spd, Manual>>>>>>>>>Auto for fuel mileage, I get 18mpg in the city with mine, My parents 3.0L auto Tribute gets 21mpg in the city, and I have 2 extra cylinders and litres!

Yeah...There is nothing wrong with a well "calibrated"/built auto. The difference between that and a stockish one is by and far huge. I prefer the manual (obviously, hence swapping the 6 speed in place of the auto).

I would also add that i would consider hybrids like pro-shifted cars automatics. It's tough to argue against the torque multiplication and consistency of the auto @ the track as well.

I know that, I was just using that as a point that even with 2 more cylinders, my mileage isn't far off of that of my parent's little suv with an auto :p.

A built c6 with a transbrake and the correct stall will out do any buddy on the 1320. And I'd put money on it. I love manuals to play with on a street car. Driving one everyday, and for me I drive atleast a hundred miles a day, got old, and my leg cramping up. 3 years of it was enough. Now I'm driving my automatic 4.0 4x4 ranger. It's all a preference, however I can be more comfortable everyday driving an auto

Standard ftw. I drove an auto for the first 3 years of having a license and hated every second of it. For drag racing sure, autos can be fine. But thats because you are WOT the whole time and its more consistent, on the street its the complete opposite. I NEVER knew what gear it was going to downshift into, when it would downshift, all that sort of thing. I'm so sick of getting in a car and having IT take ME somewhere, i want to drive MY car. I want control of what gear im in rpm etc. And for the record, all those 'autostick' things SUCK. Its like the worst of both worlds. Sloppy shifts and they will shift on their own if you rev them too high
