So i have 17" 03 cobra wheels (chrome) on my mustang, and i wanna change things up. Thought about plasti dip for the removable feature but today i bought the dupli-color shadow kit for the black chrome effect. I tried it on a chrome shifter handle and it almost looks pure black. Maybe less coats will lighten it up (instructed more for darker apperance.) What are your guys' thoughts? If it looks black i dont know if i will like it and i cant peel it off like plasti dip. If you have black chrome wheels please post pics. With your opinions! Thank you!

idk if any paint will give you the same quality of black chrome you may hope for. i'd stay chrome or buy black chrome wheels.

I would be afraid paint would give you EXACTLY the same performance as black chrome, which I have never heard anything good on for longevity. I have some nice connectors in my stereo(battery terminals and nice ring terminals) that are black chrome and I have already learned the hard way that ANYTIME I touch them I need to polish/clean the oils from my skin off or even just a day or two will etch my fingerprints into them. I have heard the wheels are about the same. Painting any wheel all the way to the rim will not last and powder would really be the only long-lasting option and I don't think there is a black candy powder, but I might be wrong.

Yeah all i hear about black chrome is how the finish never lasts, F that. gunmetal or hypercoated if you want a little more flash would look good. I love the finish on my wheels.

I used the same kit on my chrome GT rims. I only did 3 light coats then 4 coats of clear. They will last as long as you take care of them like any other chrome rim.

On and off the car yes... Off the rims no.

Like anything - great care will make it last. Carelessness will not.

Idunno I have a hard time believing that the edge would not get chipped the next time you go to mount tires on it. Sure you can sand/respray at that time but I just had a buddy have a place here powder some stock AMG wheels for his Veedub and I can't remember the price but it was cheap enough to justify the price over rattle cans to me.

In my experience in mounting tires, the newer machines don't touch the edge or lip of the rim to mount or un-mount the tires. As long as its a shop that deals with custom rims.

There is still a lot of pressure on the edge of the rim as the tire slides over it especially on the lower profile tires(not like in this case). If the tire had been removed and there was more paint/clear on the rim/barrel rather then just up to the edge of where the rubber was when it was painted it would have a better chance of making it through a tire change. Painting it with the time on the rim though I am afraid that it will just pull/chip the edge when the tire is removed let alone when the new one is mounted.
