So when i was bleeding my brakes, everything was going how it should, but then when i went to retighten it after a few releases (don't have a bleeding kit, so i had my dad pump it 3 times with the valve closed and hold it, then i'd open the valve to let the air out, close it, and repeat) and the valve wouldn't shut. it keeps spinning in either direction. did i back it out too far? is it salvageable, or do i need to exchange it for a new caliper?

this was on the rear driver's side caliper if that matters.

How far did you back the bleeder out?

BTW you can rig a self-bleeder. Look elsewhere for the Gatorade bottle one-man bleeder. Worked well enough for me when I had no one to pump the brakes replacing calipers.

Stripped bleeder? Was it hard to turn in either direction?
nope, not hard at all. and i'm not sure. it feels like there's no threading to catch. i tried to push it in with pliers and catch the threads but it wouldn't.

apparently further than i thought i did. not much further than it needed to open the valve though

Sounds like a stripped bleeder. Did you use a flare wrench or a box wrench? If not, you probably rounded the head of the bleeder.

Im gonna say stripped bleeder as well, you'd be surprised how easily it will happen.

Then you probably have some crud stuck in the bleeder, you can swap bleeders from your other caliper and see if the problem stays with the bunk bleeder or the original caliper.

Now would be a good time to upgrade those calipers!
I would have if they were the fronts

I'm sorry, but how exactly do you get the valve out?

Just remove the bleeder screw.

... Are we talking about the same thing???

The bleeder is the circled piece on the caliper. It just screws out like a bolt.

yeah i know, yes we are talking about the same thing, it doesn't screw in or out on this caliper... it just keeps spinning in either direction lol

Well, that's a new one. Never seen that, IIRC the screw is steel and the caliper is cast, so neither should strip. But it sounds like one of them is.

Just get e new caliper from the part store, it should have a bleeder. That way there is no question as to what broke. Or get one from a Junkyard.
