breaks

i put new rotors on the stang today with my 2month old break pads. after taking a nice little cruise around the city i noticed a burning smell. it was coming from the tires i put the brakes on. the breaks were rather warm as i could feel the heat coming off of them. any suggestions on what this may be and if its safe to drive?? thanks

As long as you don't have any constant rubbing issues (indicated by a "dragging" feeling when you let off the gas) with the BRAKES :)-P), then I would just assume it is normal. Same thing happened when I installed the GT500 brakes on mine... once you bed in the new rotors, you should have no further issues.

Did you compress the caliper piston all the way in before reinstalling the caliper?

the new rotors come with a non-rust coating on them. did you spray them with brake cleaner before putting them on? nothing will happen if you didnt just smell for a bit. and they will smoke. a little. but it will go away

That is a pain in the ass to do...I hate doing rear brakes on our cars.

True story... but did he do the rears? I assumed he did the fronts... since he didn't specify.

But yeah you are totally right... and it's not just Mustangs, almost all cars need that cube tool to compress the rear calipers.

My buddy who works for Ford has the snap-on tool that compresses and turns at the same time...it costs a fortune though.

Yeah... good luck finding one of those tool kits for less than about $250 off the truck. but I love Snap-On/Blue Point stuff, best on the market IMO.

yes it was the front rotors, they were extremly hot. it smelt like a chemical was burning. i used the break cleaner lightly so could it be some of the non-rust stuff you were talkin about?

Could be... I usually drench a rotor in brake cleaner, or in a parts cleaner bin like my dad has at the shop. That stuff is finicky some times.

I wouldn't be afraid to drive it, just keep an eye on it.

if everything is tight, and working properly. then you should be fine. the smell will go away.

every auto parts store should rent the tool to compress and turn the rear pistons in. It cost like 50bucks max.

Just get up to about 100mph and then stand on the brakes....that should should take care of any excess material lol..

Caliper turn back tools are available at Harbor Frieght, for a whopping $45...

I've had the same problem a while ago, when I did my rear brake pad chance in a hurry. First thing I noticed was that the car did not roll as easily as it did before. You need to take the brakes apart again, and make sure that the piston is recessed all the way inside.
