Burning Oil

I'm burning about a quart of oil every week or two, and today I noticed that there is only smoke coming out of the passenger side pipe. Because of that, I have decided to check my head gaskets, and if that is fine, then I am going to assume I have bad rings on that piston. Is there any other possibility? I really have no idea what else could be the problem, so tomorrow I'm going to pull the plugs on that side and check to see if there is some discoloration or excessive corrosion on one compared to the rest. Thanks for any help in advance.

To burn oil the most typical way in is past the rings, or down the valve stems past the seals.
If your burning a quart a week i would guess you probably have a broken or worn rings on that side.
Pulling the plugs will give the best immediate indication your burning oil, i'm assuming your car has a few miles on the clock?

210k. Almost time for a rebuild, or an engine swap. I want to pull the plugs today, but with a bit of a drizzle outside, I don't know how possible that is going to be.

How hard is it to replace rings while the engine is still in the car? I only want to replace the ones that are faulty right now, so I don't get too much money into this motor before I decide what I'm going to do with the car. I really don't want to fall in the same pit my brother did when he went to do the rings on his 86 Firebird, because he pulled the engine to do "just the rings," but has had the engine out for three months and has dropped a lot of cash into a virtually worthless engine.

Thanks for the help guys.

I agree , at that mileage its worth pulling the motor and doing some serious re-conditioning, maybe the rest is ok but it depends how much you like your car i suppose. ie is it worth the money to do?
Maybe get a good low mileage unit from a breaker, least cost and fastest solution.

Well another thing that I added on another forum that I didn't say here is that my engine does run on the hotter side, and I need to add coolant every week or two. They said on the mustang source that this is indicative of a blown headgasket more than a worn/broken ring. Does that change anything?

Do a block test to find out if you have a blown headgasket.

A compression test can help identify if you've got weak seal in a cylinder.

A leakdown test can you tell you badly you're bleeding pressure off.
