Cam Install Question

Ok stupid question, I have my shortblock on an engine stand and I am wanting to install my fcam. Well I slide the cam all the way in and there is about 1/4-3/8 of an inch play going in and out (This is with the thrust plate installed). Before I go any further, is this normal, if not then what holds it in place when I go to install the timing chain ect... So it doesnt walk in and out.
