Stock if you're lucky. Stock cam and 185's is gonna be real close.

I would still clay the heads to make sure.

AFR says the 185s require piston notching so my guess is even the stock cam would be pushing it close. My guess is the 185s are going to want a pretty healthy cam, not something the stock pistons would be able to handle without some notching.

i heard of people doing it but being really close over rev and there goes your valves. i have after market pistons and had big relieves but they didnt go back far enough. didnt know till i pulled the heads and saw were they were hittimg just bearly but they were hitting. so i just notched the pistons.

the OEM pistons have valve reliefs as cast ... they just need to be enlarged. I wanna say that there was a link on here where someone took the an old valve (same sizes as the heads he was puting on) and epoxyed a roloc disc to it. Chuck the valve into an air drill (or high speed cordless) and go to work. This can be done with the short block still in the engine bay, just be very particular about covering coolant and oil passages as well as a thoroughly cleaning up afterward. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

using the old valve is a PITA if you can't get the paper to stick to the valve. I used it for a guide to make an impression of what I needed to cut then I used an air sander to cut out the relief on the piston. Took about 15 mins a cylinder to do including checking and cleaning.

here's pics from when i did it. I came back and hit it w/ the air sander to knock down the sharpness and get it out closer to the cylinder wall and I laid the relief back some for more radial clearance.

of course I did this w/ my performer heads then swapped to the Z304 w/ the same 2.02 valves but the intake valve was moved so I lost a little clearance and couldn't run my cam 242/248 .612 and got pissed and just put the stocker in it.

backwards is this question.

purchase heads. purchase a good cam that will mate well w/ those heads and your intake.
clay the pistons I prefer lime green playdoh, cause green's cool.
cut piston to give .100 clearance all the way around the valve(both valves), this includes the edge of the valve

if you cut it 1st its like saying hey i bought some tires what car should i buy to put these on.
