Basically what the title said. I got a nail in my tire today and I needed a fix so I brought it to this shop. The guy said the can only plug it and they couldn't patch it. I never actually heard of that but I just got it done because I needed to. But plugs aren't permanent so I was wondering can I bring it to another shop and get this patched or do I just need a new tire. I'm not riding on a plug if it isn't permanent.

Sucks too. I'm thinking I may just throw my snow tires on because the winter is coming soon and I am most likely selling the car by next summer.

dude that plug will last longer than that tire! unless it's some kinda temp plug i've never heard of. plugs are good for the life of the tire. if it's not loosing any air then your good with a plug :)

what he said!
a patch on the inside would have much more expensive because the tire would have to be broken down, patched, remounted and rebalanced.
Plugging doesn't even require taking it off of the car.
You can even get your own kit and keep it in your tool boxfor a DIY next time.

Just because you haven't heard of a plug, it doesn't make it a "temporary fix". We use plugs all the time around the farm, they are cheap and easy. I can see and agree with a patch being a better fix, but unless the tire starts losing air, I wouldn't worry about it.

We always plug tires at the shop, it's quicker, more effecient, and "usually" a better fix than patches when you pick up a nail. Patches are good for small holes though. Personally, a pull-through plug/patch is the best fix out there. Make sure the plug is a permanent repair one, we use Black jack ones I believe. I have plugs on both rear tires of my mustang, 1 in the rear of my brothers car, and 1 in one of the tires on my escape, no issues so far and the ones on my mustang were plugged 20000kms ago :).

The dude said it would only last a few months. I don't know I thought it would be temporary then. I don't know anything about them so I was getting worried.

i used to work at a tire shop. we ONLY used patches there. like a lot of people have said plugs are a temp fix but patches are a permanent fix. theyll last as long as the tire as long as it was done properly. we charged $20 to patch a tire.

im not saying theyre a problem. however ive seen plugs separate belts in tires over time because of putting the plug in the hole

Yea see thats what I'm afraid of. I paid $7 in some store in Brooklyn where they do all the work in the street. I guess the quality is fine. I don't need the tire blowing up on me.

I agree.

Also I would never run a plugged tire on the front. If a steering tire on a truck ever got a flat. We installed new, and that steering tire was now a trailer tire.

Patches are always the best fix.

I've also had great luck with plugs.. I do em at home. Some people get concerned over nothing IMO.

I work at a shop and have had plugs come back, that have ripped out, pulled through to the inside or just plain leaked. If done right in the center tread section you will be fine. But if your to close to the edge of the tire it could tear as the sidewall is softer... I to plug tires, and pep boys where I work plugs tires so im not 100% against them but I rather have a patch.
