New problem, i drive it to work today going down the highway and car shuts off and then back on. 1 mile later car just turns off, pull it over, crank it and it tries to turnover but nothing. So i leave it for a couple of hours go back and it starts right up. Drive it about 4 or 5 miles and it does the same thing, just stops. It turns over just won't start. I can hear the fuel pump when i turn the car on and it tries to start but seems like it's not getting any gas. Do you guys think it is the distributor?

Does your fuel gauge work? Maybe the gauge went bad and your tank is on empty. Try taking some gas with you on the next trip.

Battery cables are a good think to check too, as stated above. Check the easy / free stuff first.

I had a similar problem it was the battery wires, it was the one wire that runs to the little fuse panel block under the hood. I would follow the wires and make sure the connections are good.

Well, I just finished reading your post on the exhaust questions and learned a bit more about the problem described in this thread. The loud pump was probably a warning that is was about to go bad. The easy way to check it is to attach a fuel pressure gage to the schrader valve on the fuel rail and watch the pressure to see if it is fluctuating or dropping-off while reving the car. The pump may be providing adequate fuel to keep the car running at idle, so you may need to rev the engine a bit and hold it there while watching the gauge. Hope this helps!!

id service your pattery. it costs litterally $5.00 and rules it out as the problem.

step 1: remove cables
step 2: remove heat cover
step 3: remove felt washers on terminals (if on.)
step 4: remove battery and place on a level surface (many leave it in the car)
step 5: wipe down and clean exterior of batter
step 6: remove battery tops (usually there are two of them)
step 7: clean battery tops to ensure there is no corrosion or debris on them
step 8: use distilled water to fill the battery to the proper level ($0.80 per gallon at local super market.)
step 9: put battery tops back on
step 10: use wire brush to clean battery terminals and cables ($4.00 at local parts store.)
step 11: use baking soda and water misture on battery terminals and cables to remove corrosion.
step 11: apply new felt washers ($0.99 at local parts store)
step 12: apply anti-corrosion gel onto terminals and cables ($0.99 at local parts store, or use petrolium jelly)
step 13: place battery back into vehicle
step 14: check all connection locations for corrosion, damage, or a loose fit.
step 15: inspect as much of the cables as possible for cracks, tears, breaks, and corrosion
step 16: apply battery cables to terminals and tighten.

step 17: brag to all your friends about how you serviced you battery like an OCD pro!

NO dude, I am telling you I had this same exact problem when i first bought my stang and changed wires plugs cap rotor fuel filter coil and it ended up being the little sence in the distributor. But I just change the whole distributor bc personally I thought it was easier. But I would put $100 on it that thats your problem!!!! GOOD LUCK

sounds to me like a dizzy prob too. but like already stated ck the free stuff first. A sign the pip is going out is excessive black dust in the bottom on the dizzy under the cap. The pip is about $20 and the whole dizzy is about $120 with a warrenty.

I am pretty sure the problem is the stator (pick up coil) in your distributor. If you are experienced taking the distributor apart you can change it, otherwise just replace the whole distributor.
