Dying and starting over a short period of time is symptomatic of a failing stator (PIP). The stator is located on the distributor shaft. The part is not expensive ($25+/-) but you will be required to remove the gear at the end of the distributor shaft. This is normally done with a press. A reman distributor may be your best option. Be sure to mark the direction the rotor is pointing before removing so it can be reinstalled in the correct orientation.

That I assume depends upon your mechanical skills. If you just want to replace the distributor that is a pretty straight forward job. If you want to replace the stator I would have someone with a press re & re the gear. If you are planning on doing repairs yourself, I would recommend that you buy a repair manual (Haynes or Chilton) and a OBD1 digital code reader.
