just tried clutchless shifting... and it was fairly easy.

i was surprised of how little effort it took to slid it into neutral. but it takes FOREVERR to let the rpms drop. like 3 seconds is how long i sit in neutral before the rpms drop so i can shift into the next gear.

it was cool. but i definitely didnt feel comfortable doing it. so i wont do it unless i need to.

one question: what is actually taking place in the tranny when you hear the gears grind?

The hangin idle, or taking a minute for the revs to come down is a common modular complaint, the sloution is reported on this forum a few times in the 2v section if it bothers you.

When your gears grind, it's because the teeth are trying to mesh, but can't. Synchros are like tiny clutches, the bring the gears up to speed for you and match speeds for you. That's why you may hear a whirring type sound on downshifts, especially into first. It's alos a weak link, the reason why big trucks don't use them.

I didn't know trucks didn't have synchros but that makes a ton of sense.

Older pickups like mine with a "granny low" gear are also not synchronized on first and reverse gears. Everyone with a four speed nowadays says they have a granny gear, but almost all are actually unsynchronized, and that's the easy way to tell.

hmm... like i said it was pretty easy. 3rd just seemed difficult but 1st - 2nd was a piece of cake and slid right in.

is it possible to mess up the tranny by grinding your synchros?

Yes you'll wear them, but people like SRThandz also wear the shit out of their synchros. In normal driving I typically don't downshift as a means of slowing myself ever. Brake pads are alot cheaper and easier to change.

ok so wait... downshifting is bad for your synchros? or engine braking is bad for your synchros?

bad in the sense that it's wearing them, not bad in the sense that they'll blow up right now.

anybody tried it?

my cousin says he can do it in his saturn so i dunno.

ive seen that guy with the face paint do it. ive also heard its bad for your transmission. true or false?

It can be done. You just have to know your shift points and be exact or it will grind pretty bad. Truck drivers only use the clutch when taking off in first gear or reverse. But big truck transmissions are not synchronized like car transmissions are. They have sliding clutches instead of synchronizers.

I used to be able to shift without the clutch in the VW Rabbit I used to have. I have tried it in my Cobra, I could get out of gear no problem, but getting back in is. But you have to rev it pretty high to get it out of gear.

No because once your already in gear the synchros do nothing.

great now my retarded self is confused......

Synchros, are like little clutches that match the speed of the gear your coming out of to the gear your going into. They "rev match" for you, follow this?

Once your in a gear, the synchros do nothing, just like your real clutch (your real clutch of course continues to grip, synchros do not).

So engine braking does nothing to the synchros, but downshifting does, any time you engage them they wear. That means upshifts and downshifts, just like anytime you engage the clutch, it wears.

If you match RPMS perfectly everytime, you'll never wear the synchros.

If you matched RPMS perfectly everytime synchros wouldnt have been invented. No one does, it's their intended function. I'm not saying it will break your transmission, I'm just saying it's more wear, and I'm weird and avoid it, even though it realistically doesn't matter.
