I am putting pencil to paper and making a master plan for the 1997 Cobra. I am the 3rd owner and a few mods where done when I got it. I am trying to figure out if the gears are stock or a mod set. At 70 mph with the cruse locked in it runs at 2100 rpm's. My brother "and his bank" bought a 2010 slomaro SS and it is my mission to put a spanking on his new $45k toy with my paid off Mustang.

My car when it had the stock 3.27s turned 2100rpm @ 70 so it seems like you might still have the stock gears in place. Is the speedometer correct though? A lot of people do gear swaps but don't correct the speedo.

Thats stock gearing... Go 4:10s, or 4:30s(alot of cobra owners end up switching to these after 4:10s)

While your at it, buy a new diff cover. Some 31 spline axels.. and maybe a new diff if u have the money.. may was well do it all and do it right the first time

It is my DD and I put 60 miles a day on it so 4:10 are out. I read about a 6 speed swap in Mustang Performance Mag they used 3:90's in the rear and with the 6th gear it was turning 2200RPM at 70 mph. The car had a turbo on it and they said the gear spacing was perfect to keep the rpm's in the best range for producing boost.

a gear swap really does not affect milage as much as people think. A lot of guys on here have seen maybe 1 to 2 mpg less when running 4.10's compared to 3.08's or other stock ratios. Comparing that to what you get out of a gear swap, it really makes sense unless you are doing ALL city driving...

actually alot of guys get improved gas milage when doing a gear swap to 410s or 30s.. mainly cuz they do alot of intown driving and some highway.. but theyve gotten about 2mpg more

Gears and a blower. Then stomp on his ass.
