i've put them on a few caterpillar engines.
just buy a block heater, your oil will heat up fast enough.

what kind of temperatures are you talking? i live far north and my winter cars have always only had block heaters and they fire up great even at -37*C

I would buy a block heater except for the installation process. I dont want to have to open freeze plugs and whatnot. The temps vary but im not really worried about my car not starting, more the cold start. I dont want the wear that super cold starts bring

I have a winter beater for the winter, it does the job. But I DID have to drive my car 1 winter before I could buy my truck and the thing starter in -42 celsuis weather. VERY VERY hard on the engine though. I just have a block heater on both my vehicles, oil pan heaters are not that useful, using synthetic oil is probably more effective than using the heater. Not once last year did my exploder not start because of the cold weather, and I just put Valvoline synthetic blend high mileage in it. Block heater is a WISE investment if you start dipping to the -20 celsuis range though.

What? I never had the cash for a winter beater and I was 15 and still a learner driver. Trust me, driving that thing for 1 winter gives you LOTS of driving experience and appreciation for a 4x4 truck :p.

any temperature in phoenix wont really hurt your car.. if you are that worried about oil running through everything, buy a primer pump and prime it everytime before you crank it.
