Okay, so I'm trying to make a "guide" for people new to sn95s or are looking to buy a sn95.

So in this thread please submit common problems with the 5.0 and a solution.

Once I have enough information I will put together a "guide". I will also make updates to it, so if you have any addition info to add please pm me.

Thanks guys!

I think we got lucky to get the 5.0. Parts are cheap and plentiful. Lots of similarities to fox 5.0 but some differences too.

Common 5.0 problems-

-PIP inside the distributor causing no start problems: Origional is only good for about 150k Miles. Remanned units can be scetchy (some good some bad). OEM remanned or new still better than most aftermarket. PIP can be replaced for cheap but whole dizzy will need to be disassembled.

-CCRM: contains relays for: cooling fans, a/c compressor, fuel pump. Basically unserviceable.

-Trans.: T-5 input shaft and bell housing is about 3/4" longer than a fox t-5 making finding good used units difficult and more expensive

Idle issues caused by IAC, TPS issues, overheating issues are pretty common as well. CPU makes it hard to do extensive engine mods

Harmonic balancer sucks...
Fuel lines tend to break down in the engine bay..
No OEM replacement available..
Not enough 5.0 to go around some people had to settle for a 6er...

The factory balancer can possibly slip on the rubber insert.Setting timing with a spun balancer will cause incorrect timing. Generally when this happens the rubber insert will be sticking out farther in one place than the rest, but not always.

This could cause all kinds of issues including but not limited to:

detonation
poor performance
poor fuel economy
no start condition (if it slips far enough)
poor idle
missing

TFI (Thin Film Resistor) module, aka ignition module overheats and burns out. It is located on the passenger fender just in front of the strut tower on 94-95 year models. It is bolted to an aluminum finned heat sink, and REQUIRES DIELECTRIC GREASE BETWEEN THE HEAT SINK AND MODULE. Problems with the TFI are very similar to problems from the PIP going out:

No start condition
Missing
Poor idle

Note: The TFI can be tested at a reputable auto parts store, but have them run the tests at least 3 times. Usually the TFI needs to get hot in order to fail. Running 3 tests on a good TFI will yield passing results, on a bad one it will fail.

Note: The TFI module requires a special Ford tool to remove it. You can find this tool at some reputable auto parts vendors in the special tools section. Its called...wait for it....Ford ignition module tool. You can also shave down a deep well socket. Standard sockets are too thick. I believe the size is 3/32" but this would require verification.

Technically the balancer spinning won't mess up the timing. Setting timing with a spun balancer will cause incorrect timing. However, if I remember correctly, the actual weights that provide the 50oz imbalance are on the outer ring. Therefore, if the outer ring spins, the balance is no longer correct and can cause significant damage. Just to clarify.

I'm not sure if this is 5.0 specific, but the high pressure line on the power steering pumps leak because the O-Ring goes bad in the fitting.

Also, the throw-out bearing retainer shaft on the T5 deteriorates quickly.

Will this make it chirp like a bird?

That would actually be your throw out bearing. Granted, having a worn retainer shaft could prematurely wear out your TOB. My retainer shaft is worn out and it's causing the TOB to rattle on the shaft itself because there's so much slop between the shaft and TOB. I actually just replaced the TOB because it was chirping. Too bad I didn't think to replace the retainer shaft... But hey, the chirping stopped!

#1 Idle issues.
#2 Throttle cables are nonexistent, must find a junkyard piece or custom fab something.
#3 Heel/toe shifting extremely difficult due to pedal placement.
#4 Headers are special to the 94/95 5.0 model for emissions.
#5 still OBD1
