Dang balancer aint got no numbers!

The mark that it will be pointing to will be whatever the timing is set to at that time. This will probably be 6*-10* BTDC.

Ok, so then, once I can see what the timing is set to at that time, by logical deduction, I'll be able to tell what MUST be the 0 mark on the banancer.

Yeah I just didn't understand enough about the process to understand what you were saying. Youtube helps.

It is a little intimidating at first. After all you can't just go out and buy a new motor because you screwed the old one up. It is always better to be careful. I have painted them black and then when it is dry take some white or yellow paint (Testors model paint works great) put paint on the timing lines and then wipe it off. What is left is the paint that stayed in the recessed lines. Make sure to let it sit a while or you will be flinging paint all over your engine compartment.

Yeah I will definitely be painting mine. You saw the rust farm that it turned out to be. I'll be using a cleaning wheel attachment for my drill to get all that old rust off. Then I'll paint it black. Be careful, a harmonic balancer is not something you want to hammer on. I dont think it is worth the risk. counting a couple of lines is mot that hard and much safer.

Yeah I ordered some timing tape but I question how long that stuff will stay stuck on there. Might just scratch a line in there or something for the 0 and the 10 BTDC.

Did you read my post about painting the lines. It is very simple, easy to see and last a long time.

That long hash across the whole balancer is your 0* mark. Anything to the left is ATDC (after TDC) and everything to the right is BTDC (before TDC) going to the right your going to retard the timing and going to the left your advancing. You want 10* BTDC for stock setting but you can advance it 4* so you can set it at 6* (each small line is 2*)

Ok so if I twist my distributor clockwise (aka to the right) the I'm advancing the timing. And if I twist the distributor counter clockwise, (aka to the left) then I'm retarding the timing. Correct?

And I took this pic. If my timing is set to the line that lines up with the indicator, then should the zero mark be before, or after the line that the timing is currently set at? If we're looking at the balancer from the front and talking clockwise, of course.
