Hey guys, just been debating and going back and forth on a couple things and don't know which way to go. I currently have 17" chrome cobra wheels and I don't have big tires on the back at all. :( Now I know with 17" you can not go wider then a 275 if I wanted a Nitto tire am I correct? I am not to sure so if somebody knows more feel free to correct me. I was thinking about buying the best and biggest I can for the back tires or I was debating buying some 18" black FR500 wheels w/ a Nitto package that they have on American muscle. I love both wheels, and the package has 285s in the back, this is my weekend warrior car, maybe sees the track 2-3 times a year at best. Any ideas which is a better way? Money is a little tight and there are other things like headers and intake manifold ill be wanting to do at the end of the month. Any and all ideas are welcomed. Thanks in advance.

I have 295s on my 9" wheels.

And last time I checked Nittos run a little narrow. People have gotten away with 315s on 9" wheels. They will bulge a little however.

Just remember when reading a tire size (275/35/18) 275 is the tires width, 35 is the tires sidewall height and of course, 18 is the wheel size. I have 295/35/18's on 18x8.5" wheels but they bulge as well. Also, people have been known to run 235/40/18's on 9" wheels (help me on this Ferocious) for that stretched look.

35 is not the sidewall height. It's the aspect ratio of the tread width that makes the height of the sidewall.

I.E. a 275/40/17 tire has a 275mm tread width, 40% of that 275mm is the height of the sidewall. It's NOT 40mm.

^ Correct you are! That was bouncing around in my head as in was typing my previous response. You have no idea the arguments I've been in or mediated over this exact subject. People still believe the middle number designates tread width. (Like the old L50-15)

Ever seen my formula for calculating the OD of a tire?

Tread width = A
Aspect ratio = B
Rim size = C
275/40/17 A/B/C ok?

((((A/100)B)2)/25.4)+C
((((275/100)40)2)/25.4)+17

275/100 = 2.75
2.75x40= 109.5 (the sidewall is 109.5mm)
109.5x2= 219.2 (top and bottom)
219.2/25.4= 8.629 (measurment of both sections of tire converted to SAE)
8.629+17= 25.6 (sidewall measurement of tire plus rim size)

A 275/40/17 tire should have an OD of 25.6"
