You know..and believe me I'm sure this will go against popular belief... But I was always taught that the "Oil cooler" on these fords like in the super duties and cop cars were actually meant to get the oil to operating temp sooner..then afterwards maintain a certain temp..thus a sort of preheater first and then a oil cooler second...I mean look at how it uses coolant rather than a Heat sink like a air to air oil cooler..?

But the coolant is just as cold as the car when it first starts up which it the only time the warm oil is really needed before driving. My Ford TM doesn't say anything about the purpose of the oil cooler being to warm the oil.

True about it being cold...to a point..But the coolant will get to temp quicker cause it circulates around the actual combustion chamber where heat is at.. Also I used the term "Preheater" and should not have included that... I'm not trying to imply that it is a preheater..No way for it to be one right? more extreme temps would show it as being useful by getting heat to the oil and up to operating temp..

It could have been a dealer modified part. It very common for dealerships to modify a car after they get it to sell it and mark up the price point. (ie dealerships in the Mohave tend to modify cars and trucks with oil coolers and undercoating.)

But as far as I've seen, it wasn't an option on the order list. (At least I don't remember ever seeing it there) I'll see if I can find the PDF's of order options.

BTW all 96-98 mustangs have Romeo engines. The only reason mustangs got the Windsor from 99 to mid 01 is because there was a fire at the Romeo plant.

I believe X code on the number 8 digit of the vin = windsor motor... which mine has... :)

The oil cooler is sandwiched between the block and oil filter. It has coolant lines runing to and from it. Not sure about other 2v cars, but in 98 if you got the GT sport group option you got an oil cooler...

Retuning took the GT's V-8 to 225 horsepower, and a GT Sport Group arrived offering five-spoke 17-inch wheels, engine-oil cooler, and hood and front-fender stripes for $595.

thank you :)

Nope, you have a romeo... windsor motors also have a different number of valve cover bolts.. can't remember off the top of my head right now...

I have the same x in the 8th spot and I can assure you I don't have a windsor motor.

You could very well have the Windsor as someone could have swapped it in somewhere along the line. On the Windsors, the oil fill/cap is in the pass. side (right) side. The windsor blocks also have a "W" cast into the block in the valley under the intake and on the front of the block. With all the accessories mounted you may not be able to see it on the front.

Count your bolts, if its 11 its romeo...if its 13+ its windsor.
The aftermarket cam covers offer driver side fill on both models now. They started offering that 2 months after i bought my Windsor Team Breeds with passenger side fill.
