I mean, the most hp this car will probably ever make is 420 to 450 and I race it on drag radials and Im getting a nitrous system for it, but I dont see the point in an after market flywheel. Its a wear surface, Im not getting an aluminum one because its going to stay a street car, but I just was wondering if you really need one. Im putting in a new clutch soon is why I am asking.

If I have the stock flywheel in the car, and have to put a clutch in it, I usually throw an aluminum one in. It proves to be beneficial for less rotating mass. Some like them, some don't. Alot of people say it looses driveability but I haven't found any evidence leading me to believe the same.

A friend of mine has an alum flywheel in his 600+ horse Cobra. His only issue was when going to the alum piece it tended to be easier to stall it out leaving a stoplight under light throttle because of the lack of rotating mass. It took a little getting used to. This thing is a beast.

Well you can feel in the car how much easier it is to accelerate period. Just all around a better feeling through the RPM. Feels like the motors not fighting itself.

It would be interesting to see what that and an alum. drive shaft would do for a stock engine like mine.

It helps. Stock motor in my 95 and 98 with a AL driveshaft.

The stoplight thing is the exact reason I don't want an ALUM one. Its close to being race car stuff. Ill roll with a stock one, thanks for the info guys.

I've daily driven cars with an aluminum flywheel and driveshaft, and never had a problem, nor did I have trouble with stalling the car.

That said, they're not necessary in the application described in the first post.

i had the findanza flywheel and didn't like it. took it out and put in a RAM billet steel flywheel. to each their own!

driveability was fine with either one. i think its just personal preference.

People who have issues with aluminum flywheels in everyday cars must not be very good at adapting to manual transmissions, or taking off in general..

I Have an aluminum flywheel on my 5.0, along with an aluminum driveshaft... Driveability problems?? Is that a joke? I can barely tell the difference from before... o_0

I've got an aluminum flywheel and aluminum driveshaft on my mostly stock 94GT with a King Cobra clutch. The car revs a helluva lot harder and the acceleration has improved. My gas mileage has also gone up 1-2 mpg. Down side: it took a little while to get used to it and I burned up the clutch for the first week or so.

Is it necessary? No. What it will do is make sure more of your crank horsepower gets to the wheels where it belongs.

I have a SPEC aluminum flywheel. :headbang:

Eh I just drove my buddies GT that has a SPEC AL flywheel and I don't think they are worth the money. They aren't cheap, my original concern was do I need a stronger flywheel I guess.
