i know this is probably a stupid question but could you use 4.6 dohc heads on a sohc block?

if i can remember correctly there are adapter plates out there but it's not even worth it for the price they cost...

But it drops your compression down to about 8.3:1 if you're talking about stock internals. Blocks are blocks 94-04 and it doesn't matter which one you use they are all interchangeable if you're building from it. There are several differences between years and castings but they are all basically the same.

it works as long as you dont try to do it with a 3v motor

you can even use a 3v block with minor machining. but there's no point.

The 3v engine mounts are even different, I don't even know why you'd bring it up.

it happened to a kid i know he got a good deal on a 3v block thinking he would just put his heads on it and i was making sure this guy didnt think he could get an aluminum 3v block and just toss it in there, it was more of an fyi

are the power gains even worth it, i mean for sticking 4v heads on a 2v?
I don't think so. Like Sxynerd said, there's a significant loss in compression when putting them on a block with 2v internals. Thats a loss in power. Then there's all the 4valve specific parts you have to come up with to complete it: the timing cover, upper/lower intake, alternator and bracket, coolant crossover tube, a cai or a stock pipe, yada yada..

i came close to putting dohc heads on my 2v, i've got a built block and planned on putting a lot of boost to it so 8.3:1 at the time didn't seem too bad to me, but then i saw the price of 4 cams vs 2 lol

It would be way easier to just look for 93-98 mark VIII engines on car-part.com. They are B- headed and have teskid aluminum blocks. They dont have the forged crank like the cobra. They are 6 bolt flywheel like a npi gt motor. The 97-98 had beehive springs like the cobra. 97-98 also had an intake similar to the 99-01 cobras. They can be had for good deals. Im looking at picking up a low mileage one for a 4v swap for cheap.
