Dumb question about pilot bearing

Is the pilot bearing supposed to sit in the flywheel opening or on the crankshaft end? The reason I ask is, in the haynes manual the bearing seems to be sitting flush on the flywheel but the one I got from cjpony is smaller in diameter and doesn't sit in the flywheel opening
