engine oil capacity confusion

so i did an oil change on my car for the first time today (97 gt). it said 5 quarts in the computer system at work (don't have owners manual). so i added 5 quarts PLUS a 16 oz bottle of stp oil additive. i started it, ran for 5 minutes or so, shut off. check oil. not even on the dipstick. i add another quart. so i am up to about 6.5 quarts of oil. started, shut off. check dipstick, about mid level. let sit for 5 minutes, recheck and get same result

so at 6.5 quarts its in the "safe" level. does this sound right?

Things i know:
1 - this is NOT the original engine. i have no idea what year it is, or what it came out of. i do know that it is a NPI, due to oil fill tube on driver side, and intake is definitely an NPI

2 - my engine burns about a quart of oil every 1k miles

this may just be me being paranoid, but mostly just curiosity.

is there any way i could get some numbers off of it that would give me a year make model, or build date, etc? thanks

The 04+ 5.4L 3v engine takes 7qts, almost all 4.6L mustangs take 5.7L (6qts) of oil. The new 5.0L takes a whopping 8qtz though...

roughly 6.5qts with new filter... i fill it to upper mid-range on the stick right after letting it run...

i fill all the way up then watch the oil run down the spirals on the dipstick
