I have a '95 GT ..recently my right bank cat rusted through, so i slapped on a off-road pipe i had for a fox(no egr pipe) for the mean time. So because i couldn't connect the egr, i removed the metal pipe for the egr that normally connects to the exhaust..and just left the egr/pump sucking in fresh air. Now I noticed pinging at only "WOT", including smoke out the back at same time..i know the EGR shuts out at wot..but I have no other guess to why I'd be pinging..I use 94 octane gas, new copper plugs and frpp wires and did timing to factory standards..car idles great, no surging..pinging only happened after i changed to the off-road pipe and disconnected the EGR pipe ...any ideas??

btw..I have no mods done, completely stock except for off-road pipe and K&N drop in

Pinging [we call it pinking] is usually caused by pre-ignition. Things that can cause it are, too much air getting in, overheating, timing too far advanced, low quality fuel etc. Very basically there's too much heat going on inside the combustion chamber for one reason or another. If it was'nt pinging before your mods, try reconnecting the egr for instance, see if it goes.

My '95 was bone frikken stock when I got it, and it pinged on 93 octane. A cold air kit got rid of the problem. Might be worth a try.

Probably not dont bother with a CAI

re-check all your plugs, hook your egr back up or properly delete it (half way plunged or tune)

Most importantly check your harmonic balancer. 94-95 stangs are notorious for chucking the rubber ringer in the middle of the balancer

Thanks Nicky. Obviously you have the knowledge to override anyone's advice at any given time. It worked for me, I'll leave it at that. :knuppel2:

i dont see his harmonic balancer causing it but usually when your balancer goes bad the car will shake like hell even at idle and worse as rpms go up. just my opinion fix your egr or delete it properly

What is your timing set at?
Pulled the spout and set the timing to 10degrees BTDC@Idle ..I believe that's factory spec??

Hehe ..actually my balancer ate the dust last summer, that's when I re-did my timing..just like you were mentioned the rubber insert came out on the faulty one

Yah i deal with that term "Pinking" a lot as well, I work as a technicien for Land Rover and some of are hot-line dudes are in Gaydon, England ..ne-waz, the actual EGR valve and Pump haven't been touched..there both still in place..it's just the pipe that connects to the exhaust is off..i can't connect it for there's no attachment to the off-road H-Pipe for the EGR..so it's just breathing fresh air in the mean time(I do believe this is my problem, but not 100%) ..i'd have to cut a hole in the H-Pipe and weld on a fitting to connect the EGR pipe..hehe but I don't wanna go through all this trouble till I'm 100% sure.

I'm not sure i want to tune delete the EGR just yet(not sure what my future plans are with this car) ..but the half-way plunger idea, the "sticky" caught my eye earlier, I'm thinking on trying that route out first..have you had any success with this??
