I have a '95 gt vert, and a '99 mountaineer with the 5.0. The mountaineer has coil packs. If I swap the mountaineer engine into the mustang, can the mustang computer be used, or would I have to swap the computer too?

the computer in the explorer, nor the wiring... will be needed to put the engine in your stang. All your stock electronics will swap over to that engine, and will fully support it.

Basically, take the engine... leave everything else as it is.

Does the OBD2 motor have the same cam as the OBD1?
Having the gt40 heads and intake is there any performance gain in doing a whole motor swap.

The cam is different, and yes there will be performance gains from the gt40 stuff. I am pretty sure the stock cam is better than the mountaineer cam but hey if your swappin you might as well add a mild cam right.

that's what I thought.
explorer= good heads and intake, crappy cam
mustang=crappy heads and intake, mediocre cam.

Thanks, fellas. Very informative. I was thinking it might be less work to swap the whole thing...guess not. What I DO like is the coil pack ignition set up on the Mountaineer. Very strong, very smooth, and VERY RELIABLE, which is more than I can say about my experience with the 94/95 distributor setup.

How difficult would it be to use the coil pack setup on the GT?? Or can that not be done?

You would have to swap out all the engine wiring under the hood, and the OBD2 computer, and another pair of o2 sensors, then probably have it tuned.
it would also be easier to tune with the OBD2 puter after mods.
A guy I work with has a mountainqueer and has nothing but problems with it throwing codes all the time. The motor is solid, but he has had nothing but problems with the electronics

So it's the OBD2 computer setup that controlls the coil pack set up...No way to get it to run with the current computer??

I hear ya. Unfortunately, in my experience, the Mountaineer has been FAR more reliable electronically than my stang. I guess when it's time I'll do the head and intake swap like everyone else.

the only way to use the coil pack on your OBD1 stang is to switch to a stand alone EMS like megasquirt, FAST, or SDS... etc OR run the $1600 AEM computer.

IMHO, not worth it. The stock stuff is plenty reliable. Your issues are probably coming from that New Jersey air...

I had a 97 mountaineer with the coil pack setup, and had the cam sensor go out .... Let's just say that the stang's dizzy, coil pack, wire set, cap and rotor all together cost less than that POS.

Perhaps, but if you count the # of days down, the bill for the 2 mechanics with no idea why the car runs sometimes and not others, the one mechanic that replaced an unrealted computer part as a guess, the 3 distributors I went through in 1.5 years, the cost of the rental car during the down time, and the repair to the crack in the paint of the hood when one of the genius mechanics closed it before the distrubutor was properly seated, the cap and rotor, the ignition coil...the $120.00 distributor is looking mighty expensive now.

IMO there is a reason no new cars have good ole dizzys hang off of them any more ..... Ever thing out there is coil on plug cause u get a better spark to the plugs and it helps emissions and hp I'm sure there r some more advantages to it like the obd 2 computer...not sure but its got to be better than our computers ... But it seems like a whole lotta trouble to do and not a whole lot gain unless u want to go all out
