Exhaust Pipe diameter question

Hi all,
Rang the guy in my stainless steel exhaust maker to get my exhaust made. After taking some advice I`m going for a fail safe :notworthy: cat back system. The guy was explaining about pipe diameters and I was wondering if there was a maximum diameter that should be used on my car regarding back pressure or the likes?

Anything at all would be of help. Just looking for something to give the car its proper V8 rumble. The right sound is more important than anything else

I think the usual size is 2.5" (exluding the tips).

I have 2.5" all the way back until my tips, which are 3.25"

2.75 is pretty much max... good for 1000 HP in most cases...
2.5 is the most common, the most cost effective, and handles pretty much any power that our street rods will run into.

agreed with Chris and Bottlefed. 2.5'' is pretty much all you need or will want on our cars

2-3psi of back pressure is desired for most cars. When your exhaust tubing diameter gets too big, the A/F mix may get sucked out too fast. It's got to be in there long enough to burn for that ever-so-sweet power stroke. Then there's exhaust scavenging and exhaust pulse waves, etc.

In short, 2.5" is max unless you're F.I.

i believe mine is still 2.25, with a (slightly) modded engine.
catless with just a quarter size small, that shouldnt be too restrictive should it?
when i get my afr's i plan on going 2.5 or 2.75, but i'd like to leave it alone for now if it isnt holding anything back?
