On the Explorer 5.0 engine besides the heads and intake, is the engine block, pistons, cam and bottom end the same as the 94-95 5.0?

For most purpose yes, what are you looking to do?

the explorer engines already have the GT40 heads and intakes.
You'd be better off using the whole exploder engine and just changing out the cam and upgrading the rocker arms. You will also need the throttle body adapter too.

Ya, if you have the option of getting the longblock, do it. As stated, you will need to change the cam/springs for sure. The explorer cam or valvesprings are not made for higher RPM.

Right now my motor has Edlebrock heads with 1.7 rockers, Comp cam and a Cobra intake and looking to transfer all of that to the Explorer short block.

When i figure it out, You'll be the first to know.
Take a bit of advice from someone that has been down this time consuming and money eating path...........no matter how many miles you have on that motor...........REBUILD IT! I wasted 7 months, and 100s of dollars on a swap of this excate motor into my 94 and it was a mess, my motor only had 89K and the heads were cooked. Even the new ower i sold it to, scapped the motor and build the 306 that's in it now before i bought it back from him....and also if you have the oil cooler on it, get rid of it, we spend way to many housr fabin a tube to fit the lower rad hose...if you have any questions, i would be happy to help you.....that motor swap was 7 months of HELL!...

I would rebuild it but I don't have the $$. My budget is less than $800. I can get a used Explorer engine for $200-$400. I know it is a hit or miss with a used engine but that is all I can afford at the moment. I read on another Mustang forum that someone before bought a Summit Ford short block for $600, I did a search on Summit website and I did not find any Summit Ford short block. If the Summit Ford short block is available, I would buy that.

I know excatly how you feel, That is the reason I didn't rebuild mine, I was on a budjet, and i needed the car for work at the time, by not rebuilding the motor, I wasted alot more money and time, not to mention having to buy a second car to get to work...
You can get a full rebuild kit off on Ebay for 100 bux...

These are the guys i got mine from, awesome place to deal with, they will even swap out parts to make custom kit for you.... http://stores.ebay.ca/partsamericanautopartsstore

I can't put into words how frustrating that motor swap was, and not rebuilding the motor added 90% of the stress.....

I might just rebuild the engine if I can't find a Explorer engine. Summit sells a rebuild kit for $300. Hopefully the crank is not damaged and I will get it cleaned and polished up at the machine shop. About how much does it cost to get a crank turned at the machine shop?

The Explorer swap is fairly straight forward. I had one with less than 100k shipped to my door for an even $500. I spent about 4 days total pulling the old engine and swapping parts. The oil cooler is easy to keep, maybe 5 minutes to modify the lower hose to make it work. I tossed 11lbs of boost through it for over 20k before I sold it and as far as I know it is still going strong and boosting hard.
