I change oil daily, and I've never encountered a filter that wouldn't come off in one piece. They never give me much trouble. Did you let the car warm up before changing the oil?

Had to get a filter off my old Bronco II the same way once. First and last time I let anyone else work on it.

Yep. The engine was at normal operating temp. I always drive around for a bit before an oil change so it flows out of the drain hole easier/faster.

If I can't get a filter off by hand or with a wrench I use the leather belt from my pants. If you put it on the filter a certain way and pull the opposite way it will kinda tighten its grip on the filter as it spins it loose. No mess like with the screw driver. It really works great where you have no room, bc you can pull on the belt even if you can't get your hands in there.

Interesting... I'm going to keep that in mind and give it a shot if I encounter this situation again in the future. Thanks for sharing that!

Never failed me

Only time I had an issue was when my friend brought over his Lancer equipped with "the smallest filter ever created by man." lol

Too much shit in the way for an oil filter wrench to have done any good. I made a hell of a mess.
