Probably just to make it easier to get on and off. May also be less matirial being used to manufacture the filter, makes it cheaper to produce, means more profit margin.

It looks to have the same capacity so i wouldn't be worried about it.

^ Yea, that's what I was thinking. They may have gone to a smaller, more efficient filtering media. Therefore, they could save a few pennies on the outer "can" and still keep the current capacity level where it was.
