Ford PATS System.....

Alright so I got a phone call from my mom the other day saying that the 05 Excursion she's driving just died on the road and wouldn't start back up. She said no clicking nothing. So naturally I think bad alternator. So I take the 2hr hike down there and do the 10min job of replacing the alternator and it still won't start. Instead the theft light flashes real fast when the key is in the on position. Which I know is a PATS issue. I did a quick Google search and found something like turn key in on position for 45 seconds, remove for 30 seconds and start it and it didn't work. We unplugged the battery's (diesel) for awhile and still, nothing. So now I have to pick up a 40ft trailer in the morning and drive down there and winch it onto the trailer and bring it home. Question is, is there anything I can have her try before I go down there with a trailer? I'll be rollin solo since my 2 road trip buddy's abandoned ship for the car meet tomorrow that I will now NOT be attending. So to avoid the boring drive is there anything I can have her try to reset the PATS? I'm about 99% sure it's PATS related since it's flashing rapidly.

What'd she do to set that off do you know? Pats is pretty much impossible to bypass without a ford guy and a 10 thousand dollar computer with him. (From my experience) ask her what she may have done to throw the security system

Pats is easy on 96-00 cars lots of em actually Lincoln LS tons of cars I'm just not sure if my method works on newer cars

Ive never heard of a car dying while running from a pats issue. Usually its a restart after shutdown that causes the problem. The method that you said you tried sounds familiar to me but I thought you had to leave it in run for like a half an hour and the light would stop blinking. Then leave it in off for about 15 minutes, then try and start it.That worked for me when my 2001 malibu gave me pats issues. Have you tried a different key? Sometimes a key will get worn and the pats system will not recognize it as the right key even though it works the ignition still.

You leave it in the on position for 15 mins light turns off you turn it to off then back on for another 15 and do it one more time 4 times total .

Hmm but this thing is an 05.. I fear it won't be that easy. She said it died on the road which we thought was an alternator and ended up not being the alternator. I wonder if the key is bad. It's a new key from the stealership...

If you have another coded key, try it. If it works, the key is toast. If you don't have another coded key you'll have to tow it back to the dealer so they can hook up to it with IDS and program another key. It takes 10 mins to get into the PATS functions with IDS though they'll charge you .5 to program a new one.

You need an IDS to fix whatever's wrong with it. Good luck borrowing one. Key on for 15 min is a Chevy thing.

I've seen a f series truck, at the shifter, the little wire for the od switch rub together. Made it do some weird stuff with pats.

But more than likely its a trip to the dealer for you.

I've used this so called chevy method a bunch of times on mustangs but I always replace the ignition with one with new keys then program it http://mustangforums.com/forum/4-6l-1996-2004-modular-mustang/573325-how-to-program-a-pats-key.html

what musturd said... if you leave it on for a while it will turn off. happened in my car but the PATS system in most modern fords is pretty much the same.
