In my experience with fuel pumps and most other types of electric motors they either work or they don't. Is this right? Can your fuel pump still come on and sound like it's primeing but not be building any pressure or am I looking at a fuel pressure regulator problem? My pressure is way to low and the car won't start. I haven't had time to check the actual number but when I press the schrader valve in barely any gas will come out. Any suggestions would be welcome.

The regulator might be jacked but it could also be the pump. Hard to say. If it sounds like its coming on, i'd look at the regulator first b/c its cheaper and easiest to get at.

Ry is right. That being said, I've never seen a FPR go out so my money would be on the pump.

If you can try to tap the pump with a hammer while someone is cranking, if it starts then your pump is sticking and it should be replaced. But check simple stuff first.

My car had a fuel pressure problem, i'd turn the ignition on and the fuel pressure would start to build but as soon as the pump turned off the pressure hit zero. I had to turn the ignition on and off a couple times before cranking it or it would crank over for a long time before starting. Turns out it was the fuel pump.

Duh. I'm an idiot for not suggesting that.

I've already replaced the filter and the gas comming out of it was clean. I've pulled the plugs and they all smell like gas. They pump comes on everytime I turn the key on. I'm pretty sure I have enough volume just not enough pressure. Like I said when I push the schrader valve down gas will just bubble out as apposed to the fountain that should be spraying out. Could the pump just be weak and not be building pressure? I have no leaks and I've never had a regulator go out on me on any of the cars I've owned. I guess I'm just being lazy because I'm sure when I get a guage to put on it I'll know a lot more.

it would run fine like nothing was wrong and then it just would sputter and die. then sometimes it would just crank. if you let it set for like 30mins and it starts again thats your problem. otherwise i would look else where.
