I have a manual 95 gt mustang and im looking into getting a set of 373 gears and there roughly around 200$ from ford racing. Can I do them my self or should i have a garage do it, cause im a broke highschool student and i dont have the money for labor.

save up the money and have a shop do them....it is a hell of a lot better than having a broken car if you don't know about backlash, pinion angles, and don't have access to a bearing press

I agree with nightmare if you do not understand it 100% let a shop do it...i have a buddy that did gears himself and he didnt do them right so now he has to buy new gears and pay someone to do it the right way.......3.73 gears were one of he first things I did with my car...trust me you'll love em!

"if you have to ask."

gears and diffys aren't exactly "bolt on" rubbish... if you have to ask how to do a diffy, you're not qualified to do one. :)

no offence. lol.

Definitely get a shop or someone who knows that they're doing to help.

I did mine with the help of my local mustang club.

If you have the tools and knowlege you can. You will need a 1/2" torque wrench, a bearing puller, a decent press, a 1/2" impact, a micrometer on a magnet base stand to measure the backlash between pinion and ring gear.

You would want to replace axle bearings and seals while your there to and that takes a special bearing pulled to remove them right.

Cobraclone, the issue is the the people that think they know how to do it but really have no clue. Most performance based shops know how to do it. But if you take it to say a pepboys type shop I'm doubtful they have anyone there that can do it.

They were definitely a process for me first time I did them. Tho the first time I did them they lasted. When I went from the 4.10s to 3.55s I forgot the loctite and blew the diff lol. 3.73s so far have been good to me. I definitely agree they aren't easy. But after you do them they are a walk in the park. Once I have the car in the air and the wheels off I can have them done in 2hrs with a beer here and beer there. 2 beer job LOL. Get a shop man it's less headaches on your part if they **** them up

The place I had them done, the father is a retired Ford tech, and has his own shop now... He's done 100s of gear swaps, I don't think it was his fault to be honest, I am starting to think I got a defective bearing in my rebuild kit...

Cost me 3 hours in labor for them to do it... so it wasn't to bad... I had one place quote me $700 in labor to install them, even thou I had the gears, and rebuild kit!...
