I was wondering if there was any difference between GT40P's and GT40X's (other than the cars they come out of)?

well gt40X heads never came on a car, they are aftermarket aluminum heads, gt40s are the cast irons off a cobra, between the gt40 and gt40p, i believe they are the same heads but the p's have a different plug angle, some people have told me that the p-heads flow better but i dont how true that is, as for the gt40X heads they are aluminum with bigger valves, better springs and bigger ports

Oh ok cause the local junk yard only wants $60 bucks for them and I was gonna pull them off an explorer clean them up and throw them on, do you have an idea as to how much of a difference they will make, I was guessing maybe like 10-15?

you'll get more than that, but an intake with it would be a good deal of improvement, if you have the money then get the heads ported and get bigger valves installed, that'll make a big improvement, but because the plug angles are different on the p-heads, you have to get a different set of headers

The difference in the gt40 vs p is plug angle and valve size. The p's flow slightly better but the difference is negligable.

Fyi...some of the explorers did come with the gt40 head too..

Look on the casting on the end of the head.

Gt = gt40

Gtp = gt40p

what are those heads capable of power wise?

In stock form they are worth a good solid 25-30hp over e7's.

When ported and ported right...they can go a long way.

Ever see any of the nmra factory stock cars? They can only use e7's, gt40, or gt40p heads.

it was the late 90's explorers that had the gt40p heads right?

96-early 97 = GT-40 (stamped "GT")
late 97-2001 = GT-40P (stamped "GTP")
