Hello everyone!
So yesterday i went to the junkyard and procured an upper and lower intake manifold and cylinder heads off of a 2001 explorer with 70,000 miles on it. I got everything for just under $200.00!! (i know the owner). My question is what should i have done to the cylinder heads?? i.e. a valve job/ new valves, having them cleaned up.... My plan is to get a set of 1.6:1 rocker arms and new valve springs. Any suggestions? Also, how to go about cleaning the intake.
I'm ordering an E303 cam and lifter kit and some 3.73 gears and putting them in with my AFM powerpipe and MAF. With the heads done right and the intake the car will be a new monster.

Don't bother with letter cams. Go get a custom cam ground and matching springs. You will be much happier and the cost won't be astronomical.

I disagree.

I don't know where you get your custom cams but FTI is $300.00 for a cam.

The E cam is not the worst thing in the world. The E cam is very close to the TFS Stage 1 cam.

Depends on how much your willing to spend on the heads. I would have a valve job done, as well as new springs. The Trick Flow Springs are probably the best bang for the buck. They come with Chromoly retainers too!

take them to a head shop and have them tested first. that will give you a foundation to work off of. ... it 16 valves are leaking, you know what the next step is... lol.

speak with you head shop guy and ask him his suggestion. as for cleaning the intake, i honestly have used brake cleaner before. didnt cause any problems. dont know if you are *supposed* to, but it didnt do anything bad when i did it.

No the motors from cash for clunkers get melted down. The seize them at the dealership then send them out from there to get melted. They don't go to junkyards.

Personally I really wouldn't waste a whole lot of money on the GT40s. Clean them up and stick them on and save up for something better.

Here is what you need to do. First of all, think about what you want out of your motor, how much power. Second, how much of a budget are you on. As for those that say a custom cam is not worth the money you are wrong. There is more to a cam than you may think. You just dont throw on any set of valve springs with a cam either. I recommend when you have made up your mind to give Jay Allen a call at Camshaft Innovations and let him educate you a little. Good luck with what ever decision you decide on.

Can't spend money you don't have. Thats something even our president doesn't understand. Apparently you don't either.

If your budgeting it hard, TFS 1 cam, clean the heads up, and roll with it. Put it together. It'll be stronger no doubt, not a oh dear god this cars fast kind of feeling, but a satisfying one.

Yes, I am and I hate to see people waste money as I have done in the past and be disappointed. There is a lot to be learned from that site. Some may like it, others may not so to each thier own is what I always say.
