i was just curious as to the differences between the two motors. (in general)
i know stroke has something to do with it, but what else, if anything?
like why can that m3 hit higher rpms and our mustangs max at around 6. i dont think that cologne 4L can handle those m3 revs...?
also, if you (god forbide) destroked a , say, 5L to around 4.6 or lower, would you be able to rev faster? (at the expense of low end torque of course)

i'm just a simple garage man, with enough knowledge to hurt myself, so if anyone could just help me learn a little more, that'd be great :)
i'd rather not trial by error, you know? :violent4:

i know u can make a 5.0 rev higher but you have to get your engine totally balanced "blue printed". i have seen a 350ci rev over 8 grand. but each piston is weighted to perfect balance and the crank is balanced with the pistons on it. the problem is the vibration at high rpms and all the weight getting thrown around and with a longe stroke it makes it harder. (aka to my knowledge, please help if i am wrong)

I think it has a lot to do with weight (rotating mass), strength of the various products within the engine, and obviously size (which contributes to weight).

Its all about internals if the cylinder bore is "square or slightly over square" and the internals are right, it will spin. The motor thats going in my car will see 8,000 shift points, so it will spin higher.

so this might be a little out of the ballpark, but would that explain a little of why say an RX8 can hit 9 consistently, because its rotating mass just goes round and round as opposed to violently back and forth. and they are like..tiny?

Rotary(if an rx8 still is) are completely different animals, built rx7's can go above 10krevs. But then you can look at the oldschool chebby 302 motors that would wind the the moon as well, like someone said above stroke has some to do with it as well as balance and strengthl

The rotary's rotation is circular vs. elliptical which the piston engine has. since the rotation of the rotary is circular there is very little stress compared to the piston engine which as you know when it spins fast it has a tendency to want to fall apart...

My RX7's shift point is 9750. It'll rev to 10500 no problem...

gotcha.
so, in theory, to take like a 5oh into European revs, all you need are strong guts, an extremely well balanced engine with...stock, or less stroke than normal?
i dont want high revs, i am just curious. knowledge can kill, you know :) i like my low revving torque beast!
