is a tank is a tank is a tank? I mean are the nitrous tanks anything super special other then the pressures they are meant to hold? I am curious to know for example if an air-ride tank could be used rather then the special nos tanks? I was thinking that one really might not notice the tank much at all if it looked like an air-ride tank? Be harder to pull out and fill so I probably would not do it but just a thought I had.
Anything to look out for with used systems? Seems like there are more then a few descent brand names on criagslist in the area but the idea of buying a system used on craigslist for some reason scares me almost as much as the fireworks I saw being sold on the side of the road in mexico years ago. They looked as big as they were(1/2 sticks at least) but the fact that they were packed by jose on the side of the road kept me from buying any. I mean they looked like ONE HELL OF A GOOD TIME if the blast didn't take any body parts with it but I wasn't about to try it and my friends were not yet drunk enough to do it either so we just drove by as Jose yelled "dynamite" to try and get our attention(true story).
Man that story is reminding me of a few others from that epic trip...
I'd like to think of nitrous tanks as pussies....my scuba tank holds 3K PSI.. and a nitrous bottle can explode at 1.5K...
comparing my nitrous tank to my scuba tanks, the only difference I visually see is the valve. (obviously) and I can hear/feel the strength difference. nitrous tank is obviously alot thinner then a scuba tank.
I think that the valve is the biggest difference in a Nitrous tank and a regular air tank but I could be wrong.
The things to look out for when buying a used kit is to make sure that the bottle still has a good inspection date on it.Nitrous bottles have numbers stamped on them and some of those numbers are an inspection date. When it expires most people that do refills require you to have your bottle inspected and then restamped with another expiration date before they will fill it.Also make sure the solenoids haven't been mixed with others from a different brand kit. Some solenoids are rated different than others. The same fuel and nitrous jets that a NX require to make a 75 shot are usually different than what Compucar or Nitrous Oxide Systems require for the same size 75 shot.If I went with a used kit I would probably have the solenoids checked out or just buy new ones. The price of some new fuel and nitrous solenoids would definately be cheaper than new pistons, rings and an overbore of you cylinder walls if you ran lean because they were bad.
