i have a hood sitting at a body shop that i was originally estimated to have painted for "around" $300. i was just told they want "about" $400 now to paint it. $400 seems a bit expensive to have a hood painted... anyone else got any input how much i should expect to pay?

i understand what you are trying to say, but that doesnt really help me at all with getting an idea for a price for one body panel to be painted. knowing that clear coat costs $600/gallon doesnt really tell me anything... maybe if i was doing it myself that would help, but im not.

Depends on the color of your car. If you have E9 ( laser red metallic ) then yeah 400 sounds about right. It cost 500 to paint the cowl hood on my 00GT because the paint is a multi stage and has to be blended into everything that painted around the hood. Also keep in mind that most hoods will need to be blended a little into the fenders, that alone will cost $$$ cause of the prep work and time. Did you by chance get that quote in writing? or a verbal?

I never accept a verbal quote, especially on paint work, because 9 times out of 10 they will try to squeeze you for more money.

E9 is a hard color to paint so ive heard. I got into a little fender bender with my 00 GT and the guy at the body shop offered to repaint the whole car for 500.00 additional bucks, because it would be to difficult to blend everything. My buddy does paint work and a few other tought colors are : true blue metallic, dark shadow grey, and tropic green.

about 2 1/2 years ago when i worked at a body shop i asked one of the guys to paint a 4" cobra R hood i had acquired,
he told me to go by a quart of paint, quart of clear, hardner and reducer to go along with it. I know you don't have DFG, but for
those materials alone (enough to paint a hood) it was $380.. $400 might not be too bad of an estimate, however
i would be frustrated in that situation because they changed their price.. try and strike up a compromise... $350.
