I want to add an open and large cone air filter to my setup. I've got a TB tube already with the stock airbox and K&N so I don't want to get a full CAI - Something like this Steeda V-6 CAI? Do you guys know where to get and how to add? Pics would help if you got them.

im confused...

if you want to get performance, get a cold air intake... they are on ebay for $50.00

or go to home depot and make one out of PCV piping.

that filter wont fit on your stock intake. if you have a K&N cone filter in your stock box, just take of the "trumpet" its the part of the air box that slides into the fender. it funnels down to about 2.5" hole. take it off and you'll have a 6" hole.

other than getting rid of the stock parts, a K&N filter and taking off the trumpet are your only options.

I have the top half of a CAI, and I want to add the open air filter portion. I know the V-6 one wouldn't work, just was posting it for reference. I think I found what I think I'm looking for with further googling (not avail from americanmuscle), but $200 is a waste for just this piece for what you get IMO. Any other kits that you guys know about? Thanks.

Here is the 96-98 specific version from Steeda (link and pic):

so you have a CAI from your throttle body down to your mass air flow sensor? then do you have a cai pipe from your mass air flow down to your fenderwall? a pic would really help :)

and yes, $200.00 is a complete and total joke for that. i personally boycott steeda. i think they are garbage.

I don't want the fenderwell piece, just the open filter where the stock air box/filter is now. Steeda sells the filter for 55 seperately, so they are charging 145 for those other pieces(?). As per the request, Here is the pic of how it looks now.

Your sig says it has a K&N filter right? Why do you want it open? If you just want it open, get a jigsaw and cut the housing off. Just leave the ring thats needed to hold the filter on. But I may have misunderstood what your wanting..

Well, it's for looks mostly, and the kN just sits in there not permanently attached, so I don't think it would work or look real well. I'm going to a car show in a week or so and the stock airbox is just kind of hanging there (bolt to the fender came off on the road) so I thought I'd throw on a larger "open" cone filter, that is not hacky looking. Other than the Steeda one, I haven't come across any that I can just fit.

take off your stock airbox, measure your MAF (silver metal tube part with the black box on top) and go to pepboys. ask them for a cone filter with that size hole on it... use a worm band (the metal ring with the screw on it that makes the metal ring get smaller) to hold the filter to the MAF.

THIS *MAY* cause problems.your car will now be breathing in 200*F+ air from the engine bay instead of 60-70*F air from the fender. this is HOT air... its not a good idea to run an in-enginebay-filters unless you have an intercooler.

the MAF on the filter side doesnt have a round hole, its the square flange, cant really band clamp a filter to it. you would need some kind of flange adapter made up.

i dunno where you got that CAI you have now, but ive never seen a kit that just has the top tube like that. I think it would be more beneficial to you to just go buy a MAC or BBK cold air kit for it, and they come with the big open filter with it that goes in the fenderwell. if you want it for show, the JLT kit has the filter sitting in the same position your K&N is in, just without the airbox, its all open and colorfull and such. I think the MAC, BBK and JLT ones are around 150-160 bucks. but they are complete and look good, all chrome and shit.

Appreciate the feedback guys and glittle, that was where I was stuck with nothing to mount it on. I agree, if I was starting out, I would just order a complete kit, but since I already had half and want to avoid the metal intake tubes, I wanted to see if anyone had done this or knew of any kits.

Hitting the googles more dilligently, I found two options - JLT makes a "budget horsepower kit" and UPR makes just the filter and MAF connector (below links if your interested).

JLT option:
http://jlttruecoldair.com/zencart/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_52&products_id=81

UPR option:
http://www.uprproducts.com/mustang-maf-adapter-with-4x9-filter-90mm.html

I went with the UPR option.

Thanks for your help. Update:
The filter and adapter were waiting for me at the front door today, threw it on and snapped a few pics. I chose the powdercoated silver piece (hard to see it sandwiched between the MAF and filter, but it's there. Sorry, the pics are crappy taken in the dark garage, but hopefully you can get an idea of what I was going for.

I didn't have any rubbing till the plenum went on,which made the connection to the TB quite a bit higher stretching the connection tube. A trip to pep boys and a ricer connection adapter allowed me to get it right again.
