Im going to be buying my first car within a month, a 94-98 GT/cobra and I was just wondering what's too high for miles? There's a 94 GT vert with about 90k miles for 4900 (Canadian). My father seems convinced that buying a car with that many miles on it will result in every penny I make going towards the car. I think otherwise. If anyone owns/has owned high mileage cars (100k+) what were they like? were they money pits? The car has/will have all routine maintenance so I'm not worried about the actual engine going on it. just everything around the engine. haha.

(I also know several mechanics who have said they will work on the car with me and teach me in the process, so labor costs will be minimal. just the cost of the parts themselves.)

90k seems low to me? Especially considering the age of the car. Right now, my SRT is the only car in the family under 100k at 67k and its the only one broke. With proper maintence, these Mustangs will last a loooonnnnngggg time.

+1. 90 k is good. Anything around 100 should be normal, even up to 130, if maintained well..

+1. 90k is nothing. i daily drove a car with 25x,xxx in the winter.
the Cobra has 104k on the clock. performance upgrades aside, ive replaced the battery and the starter since i got it in October. its never a bad idea to keep a couple digits handy but you shouldn't have a problem

my car has about 125k and my brothers 200k and they're both running strong with no problems so as long as you take care of it it will last a long time

i bought mine for $2000 with 160k on it all it needed was a tune up i don't think i've even spent $500 on parts yet the only things that were replaced outside of wires/plugs/filters were a control module and brakes.

u guys have high mileage cars

Because cars are meant to be driven!! not to look at in the garage.

I have 170,000+mi. on my 5.0. motor is bone stock. 90,000 is just getting warmed up.
The common parts that fail are the normal wear and tear items: water pump, smog pump, distributor, harmonic balancer, a/c compressor, alternator, battery, and sensors.
Don't let this list scare you. These are common on just about any car.
If you drive like you have half a brain and not thrash the car every minute your in it, you will have years of reliable sevice.

I bought my 97 Cobra with 131k on the clock. The only major repairs I have done were routine wear items like clutch, breaks, tune up, tires things like that. It now has 171k on the clock.

At 90k the only thing that would scare me would be a auto trans if it had not been maintained properly, trans flush and filter change.

My 98 has only 53k miles. 90k on a 1995 car is not much: just calculate how much that is per year.

Maintanancy is more important than milage. You can better have a 200k car that has always been well maintained than a 15k car that spent 10 year sitting outside in the rain without being driven.

I say: if it's well maintained, go for it and prove your father wrong ;)

my car has 203k miles on it. the previous owner had it since 03, i'm convinced it's not the original engine, but i'm sure i did replace the original trans (with a 250 craigslist one until i can upgrade) i had to charge the a/c which is a must in Texas, i'm about to replace the worn motor mounts and clutch... for $2500 for a 98 gt, i'm quite happy
