i have a 96 mustang GT maual transmission. I was wondering things like, how much horsepower can the drive train, rear end and transmission take stock. general parts the go bad when your frequent of peel outs, burn outs and sliding the car around.

my engine has 172,000 miles, i planning on puting PI heads, cams and intake. after which i would love to stick on supercharger or some turbos, my hp goal being around 350hp. so how much of the stuff listed above can the engine take and how much boost when i get around to that, can my engine take.

thanks.

yea and Jrgunn and I can attest that you might want to do a compression test before the head swap. :)

ok, so,im a noob sooooo...... why do i need a compression test? i understand that lost compression is lost horsepower but the loss shouldnt be that great even with 172,000 cause ford uses molly rings (i think that's what they're called) plus i wouldnt know what kind of numbers to look for anyways

It's just a good idea before you do a head swap. It's also a good idea to not do burnout's everywhere, powerbrake the car all the time, and basically beat on it. If you are going on the theory I hear over and over again, "It's a Mustang, it was built to take it" it will prove you wrong.

I know no car is realy built to take uber abuse. It's my daily driver and i drive normal, but given im into drifting, i tend to do abusive stuff on the weekends. not to much, a slide here, a slide there (open pearking lots of course). mess around for a couple minutes doing this stuff and get out of there. basicly, my car gets abused one day a week (if i even get the opurtunity). oh yeah, and then there's the couple times i had fun a rainy lot.

Just be aware, that if you want to beat it, you need to be on top of it. Don't let thing's go, if the rear end is grinding, dig into it, don't do five more burnout's, etc etc. It's an old, high mileage car, and Mustangs are built from left over family car part's, not super high performance part's. So hopefully you have some preventative maintence money in your budget.

dont have much money period, even on the weekends, i keep it to a bare minmum, and actualy, i dont do anything like that most weekends. im trying to save up my money before i start doing more drifting (hope fully i can get to the track with that money too)

158k miles on the 98gt, was 100% stock till 93k miles, which was when i bought it. ive abused the hell out of my car and its still lasted, no engine work ever. the NPI manifold cracked twice (once with me, once with previous owner), and the crank pulley fell apart, and ive had a few transmission issues (known issues), but other than that the car has been good. had just about every n/a bolt on you can think of except for headers. kept it smog legal too. PI intake went on in nov. 06, PI cams went in on dec. 06, and the PI heads went in this weekend. driving it again for the first time today (after the PI swap) and its a huge difference.

ive always used mobil1 or motorcraft fluids in mine. synthetic in the engine and trans, motorcraft gear lube in the back. its survived hundreds of high rpm pulls, sustaining it upwards of 5k rpms at times (i used to drift a lot).

take good care of it and it will last awhile.

PM away! like i said tho, just take car of the car and it will treat you right. like Jrgunn5150 mentioned earlier, if you hear something out of the ordinary, dont put it off, try to figure it out as soon as possible. ive neglected a few things on my car that have come back to bite me in the @$$ (well, wallet), the most recent one was this weekend (ps. if you hear an exhaust leak, and know the catback is loose, TIGHTEN THE DAMN BOLTS!!! i left it like that for about 2 weeks and the catback fell off, lol).

pretty much. dont think there is really much in the way of preventative maintence tho, just oil changes, brakes, filters and such.

well thats maintainance in a way. Best thing you can do is change it regularly. Anyway, One other thing. I noticed you said that you "drifted" in empty lots and then would haul ass... I don't think they look to kindly to "illegal" things on here. Even street raceing is hush hush if you do it... Cuz cops monitor these sites... Just a heads up and stay on top of the car dude :) good luck

me or the OP?

either way, go to driftday.com and check that site out. they are the organizers that set up the drifting events out here, and i know they have a norcal driftday as well, and a chicago one too. they might be in other parts of the country, so check them out for legal events. also try www.everythingdrift.com (if you log on and check out the gallery, you can see some of the drifting photos they took of me, both the good ones and the crappy ones). there are links on both those sites to other sites that might be able to guide you to a legal event.

as for all the other "questionable" things, :-X

yeah, the problem I cant find a legal way to drift. god knows i want to, but i cant find anything. I just checked out the sights torres sugjested and i still cant find anything. if there out there, the opurtunities are so limited that ive been reduced to very few options. doesnt matter right now any ways, i decided today that i wont abuse my baby until 2 things happened, A. I have some money in the bank for any problems i encounter, and B. I need to restore my mustang to it's former glory.

peformance wise it needs a new clutch, new spark plugs, somethin is definatley up wit the brakes cause they are rubbin slightly, my guess is not alighned or the caliper is not retreating properly. ill concentrate on performance after i get the following done.

aesthitics, it needs a new paint job cause the former job was abysmal at best, i need a new driver door cause someone tried to steel my car so the part of the door was bent in, it's bent out again, but believe me, it'll never be right again (wrinkles and other stuff), i need a stereo (stolen prior to purchasing car). and new wheels cause the ones on now look screwed up (original 16 inch, but there all scratched on edge among othe visual problems) I need new head lights, and i dont like the aftermarket tailights the guy put in.

yep, i have work (or should i say money) ahead of me, i hope to be drifting again by this summer regularly and completely legal. I will also use the time to find a legal way. there has to be somthing. I live in georgia so if you guys could help me find somthing here. im horrible at finding stuff like this. all the drift day listing i see are all in california, i think that's a bit too far for me to drive.

lol, too bad you live in georgia. i have my front original calipers(perfect working order, replaced with wilwood calipers), brake lights (near perfect, replaced with OE export lights), and a 2k mile-old clutch in my closet (replaced with FRPP king cobra clutch), along with my original OE 17" chrome split spoke wheels in the garage. ill look into nationwide drifting events when i get some time, and ill ask around some of my friends (like 2 of them are in the Formula Drift Series) to see if they know anything.

oh, and i replied to your PM, let me know if you got it
