Ok, I know i'm gonna get bashed on, but I just traded off my turboed import ( 97 civic ) for a 95 Mustang GT. I've never dealt with an OBD1 system before. How do I pull my trouble code to see why my CEL is on so I can fix it?

I've never done it, but i'm sure someone will eventually post up the link for how to do it the cheap way. It involves a paper clip and counting.

I wouldn't flame you, I applaud you for seeing the light :p. CEL is caused by an emission related part, be it an oxygen sensor or EGR valve. Going to an autoparts store you can pick up an OBD1 code reader and plug it to the port on the passenger side fender under the hood :).

Being new, here's a heads up. The port under the dash on you car is for the 3.8L V6 and is a non working OBD11 port on the GT's. I mention this as a lot of places don't know this and report that they can't get a reading. Yours, as mentioned, is under the hood, passenger side between the strut tower and the firewall. That OBD1 reader can be bought for about $30. http://www.tooltopia.com/equus-3145.aspx?utm_source=nextag&utm_medium=cse&utm_term=EPI3145&utm_campaign=nextag_r1

Not all autoparts stores will pull codes...however most will. You can jumper out pins under the hood with a wire and a voltmeter and count the flashes just like you said you did with the honda. Pick up a manual for the car and it will tell you how. Off the top of my head, I can't recall exactly.

the port under the steering column on 94-95 is useless! it is a non working obd2 port! I guess they had to have them in the car's by a certain year, working or not! probably a loophole in the emmisions laws for manufacturer's allowed them to have them in the car even if they did'nt work...

obd1 is a PITA

I bought my code reader at o'reillys for $30, It's a small yellow unit. Oh and welcome to the mustang world, and don't worry most of us are happy to help out no matter how newb the question is. You'll notice that we are very different to the other stang forums out there.

While your buying a code reader, get a Haynes or Chilton manual. It will tell you inside how to read codes with a paperclip, then count the flashes inside the car from the CEL. Along with a ton of other great info. If you get stumped just post the ? and we'll hook you up with minimal flaming.
J/K about the flaming.

The loser auto parts stores around me in ATL will not test OBD1 cars. I've been doing mine with a paper clip for years.
And most don't know the differance between a muffler bearing and blinker fluid.

welcome to the site
where ya from and where's the pics?

Its sad at all my surrounding stores there are only woman running the stores. They have not a clue what I'm asking for half of the time, and you must do their job for them.

I bought this one about 3 years ago for my '91 Ranger but now use it on my '95 GT:

Bought it for about $30. Works great and is really easy to use! Just search for "Innova 3145"

The port is there because they used the same wiring harness as the V6s which are OBDII, sadly our 5.0Ls aren't :'(.
