I need Imediate help

Well the clutch in the 01vert is toasted (we think), whenever he starts the car there is a loud sqweeking noise and whenever he pressed the clutch it makes that noise. The pedal is very stiff and he has a hard time shifting gears. So....how much do you think getting it replaced will cost us? We are trying to get it done the cheapest we can, because money is very tight. I work at autozone and the clutches we have are around 220 for the duralast and with my discount it would be like 200, so how much would an install cost me?

i payed $435 for a Stock Clutch, OEM Clutch Cable and rear main seal INSTALLED parts and all

If you do it yourself it will cost you $200.00 for parts and a days worth of labor.

Well me and my dad both have NEVER done anything with a clutch and have no idea how to do it. I'm scared of screwing something up. Is there like a How To guide or somethin haha. Plus I dont know if we have the tools to do it.

Get a Chilton book. step by step right in there. also check your clutch fluid

I thought it was a cable-actuated clutch? In that case no hydraulics

well I have no earthly idea, if it is something to do with the clutch fluid, how do I check it? and if its a cable actuated clutch how can I fix that. It sounds really loud and sqweeking....VERY loud, and it smells like something is burning.

No Deal... thats the price the shop gave me.

Well the car is smoking a bit from under the front wheels sort of and the car sqweeks really badly, almost constantly when the clutch isnt engaged and when it is engaged. I have no idea what it is, we think its the clutch going out but I thought id come on here and ask for some advice before we made a hasty decision.

start the car and apply some pressure to the clutch to see if it make if still make the noise if it stops is the trowout bearing.


it sucks to change the t/o, ive done this 3 times on my 94 and i just live with the noise

Take it to the shop. You will be better off.

yep, no offense but you're going to have a hard time figuring it out if yyou don't know either of those things.

let the pros handle it

Yeah we're definitely doing that, I'm pretty sure its just a throw out bearing but we are replacing everything that has to do with the clutch anyways. It might be a week or two but its worth the time and money to get it done right and fix any potential problems.

I just installed a clutch for the first time a couple months back... wasn't too bad, but it did take me a while. The car isn't my only vehicle though so I was in no rush and I have access to plenty of tools.

It would be a great learning experience, but I can certainly understand if you need it fixed asap. The only specialty tool I think i needed was a bearing puller. I tried to pop out the pilot bearing with the grease packing method but all that did for me was make a terrible mess.

I've got a haynes shop manual and I followed every step. like I said it was the first clutch install for me. good luck with getting it fixed.

thanks thorco, yeah we gotta have it fixed very soon, so doing it ourself isnt an option.
